It’s a cliche to say you want to get off to a good start, but for Jeff Lebby, anything less might be too hard to bounce back from in his second season. Brian Hadad and Robbie Faulk discuss why the games against Southern Mississippi and Arizona State might be what makes or breaks Lebby’s time at Mississippi State.

I can see them getting to 4-0, everyone gets excited then the wheels come off and go 0-8 from that point on. At this point I don't really care.

I’m still not on the Hire Lebby bandwagon.
He wasnt my first choice but I'm not seeking his termination but if we start 0 and 2 I will be on board. I wanted the guy from Liberty and GJ Kinne or whatever his name is was my second choice. Not that they wouldn't have been massive failures. Imo hiring a coach is a total crap shoot. I feel like you gotta support whoever they hire until it's just obvious they cant get it done

Eh.

I’ll say this: I had significantly more confidence in Croom’s hiring than I do Lebby because of the reasons you mentioned.

I like to think I’ve learned from that.

If we go 0-1 I'm out on Lebby. They cannot lose that game. It's sad it's even a concern of ours, but we are so bad it's possible.
I don't think it'll take the first two games to define his tenure. If you go ahead and mark Arizona State as a loss then it's down to the first game. If he wins the first two, he's exceeding expectations. If he beats USM and loses to Arizona State then that's the lukewarm scenario. If he drops both of them like a hot potato, you might as well overnight the coffin.

If we fire ANOTHER coach after less than two years, we deserve every ****** thing that happens to this football program in the future. Maybe Dan Mullen can swoop in and save us, but I wouldn't count on it. State has shown that you have about 9-18 months to start winning or you're out.

Why would a decent coach take a chance on taking the State job when we have shown, A) we don't pay that well and B) we're not patient with you.

You give a coach time if college football is an amateur league. That's not what college football is anymore.

Arizona State will roll into Starkville as a top 15 football team, but people are acting like this should be a gimme.

Exactly. It has the opportunity to be a signature win for him, but he's got to take care of business against Southern Miss.

Beat me to it, this is now professional sports with unlimited free agency, we have amateur coaching in a professional league now. Amateur D coordinator, Amateur head coach/O coordinator (again a problem that he is calling plays not ehad coaching), our line recruiting/purchasing on both sides of the ball is barely serviceable. I would argue if you give a coach 4 years who isn't the right guy you hurt the program much more than letting one go too quickly in current college football. The real problem is that Selmon fired his buddy from where he was from, if he would have fired his buddy but from OU I'd have more patience. I will say I think Selmon learned from that mistake and hit a proverbial home run with baseball hire!

Patience ended when you get to rebuild the roster every year with PAID players, you either choose athletes well or you don't. If you don't choose well and choose duds that don't perform two years in a row, you "have shown" you don't deserve to be paid well. You simply don't get 4 years to build team and coach guys up anymore. And if players don't perform, they should be shown the door like any other job

They return the most player starts of any Big 12 team and 2nd in the country. That said if we don't show up at home and get spanked like we did too many times last season, it still counts as a dud. If we play well and have a chance its a positive.

aGAIN, why would a decent coach take the Mississippi State job if we fire Lebby after two years?

It's not pay, because we've always gone cheap on paying coaching hires. To be sure they've always gotten a raise to come here, but we've never broken the bank to hire a FB coach.

What exactly does State have going for itself that would attract a better coach than Lebby?

Let's revisit this after the first two games are played. Heck we might know after the first game if Lebby is aGAIN or aBUST.
