A large portion of the Mississippi State fanbase jumped for joy Wednesday when the university revealed the beloved interlocking logo would be available for use all season long. Brian Hadad and Robbie Faulk discuss why this decision was the right one, and why it’s more proof the university is hearing its fans in this time where it demands so much from them.

I have heard that several times. Thought Nike owned the rights ? Or somebody. The logo ain't underwear. We shouldn't change it every wash day. Idk why we ever changed from the interlocking logo. Of all the ridiculous looking logos we have had imo it's the best.
You are all over the place.

Am I ? I like the interlocking best but I think if you want to market a logo you dont change it every 15 years. And now here we are with 3 logos in 5 years. Eta " if we dont change from Banner M to State script this administration just doesn't care what the fans want". "Putting it on the helmet isnt enough, we want it changed everywhere". 6 months later " if we dont bring back the interlocking logo this administration just doesn't care what the fans want" . " Okay that's awesome but now we want it to be the main logo, put script State away" Sure. I'm all over the place. Its me.

That was always a bullsh*t excuse that wasn't true. Templeton just didn't want to take responsibility for his decision to change to the M-State logo.

If you haven't paid attention - no one knew the interlocking MSU was an option with State script was pushed.
I caught that, but I don't buy that. If this truly was the case, then push a logo that folks like. You don't hear any negative complaints about the M over S and since "We Are A Baseball School" wouldn't that make the most sense?

You're making to much sense. You're over the head of some.

But you're right, let's run the school on the whims of message boards. Genius. maybe Brian and Robbie's next project will be to bring Dominoes for the new Crossroads development. Or hell get it renamed Hunt Club in honor of interlocking.

In one of Steve's latest podcast he says the Univerisity allowed the trademark to expire on the interlocking. So supposedly The logo was up for grabs to anyone who wanted to buy it.

So Steve bought it. But was nice enough to call Cohen and gift it back to the University.

Anyways, Listen for yourself. I believe that's the story on how it came back recently. If you believe Steve.

As for "Nike owned it". Maybe that is something a smart AD said to shut up certain people. But I never heard a Unversity employee officially say that in public. More likely in a one on one setting someone said that, and the rumor spread.

Btw, everyone dogs on LT, but fact is in 95-96 MState appeared on the basketball court and uniform. The "interlocking" was a deal done with NIKe about 95-96 by.... Larry Templeton. Now why in 2003 or 04 we left NIKe and went to Russell (thus leaving the interlocking) would be an interesting truth and story to know.

However I don't trust Steve, Hadad or Faulk to ever truthfully report that story. It's just easier to paint a bogey man/conspiracy and say "Dey took our logo."

To be clear, the people who are pro banner think that we should just keep pushing it despite the fact that the VAST majority of the fanbase who will be the ones donating money to make the program successful hate it? Because of marketing? To who? what amazing success was waiting for us if we stuck with the banner??

State sold out the stadium more under the banner M era than ever in their history.

Has State had a bump in tickets sales in the past few days?

I went out there this am looking at tickets. Still plenty of season tickets available in any section you want. Even the 100 level.

I hope to hell State is 4-0 heading into the Tennessee game. You interlockers will have no excuse as to be there

Couple of things:

- The vast majority don't hate the banner M, just a loud minority. And it appears that that hatred was likely just more towards the anti-interlocking attitude from LT that has festered over the years;
- As to your point about marketing, YES, that should be taken into account. The banner M is known throughout the country, as it should be after 25 plus years.

I still have not figured out why everyone can't be made happy here. We get the interlocking on the helmet, which the vocal minority wants. Now just relegate the terrible &tate, which many other people don't like, to just basketball/baseball uniforms and merch and we'd all be happy. The banner M (official university logo, I say again) belongs on websites, the 50 yard line and on the basketball court. It does everything we want it to do.....it is marketable, known and still emphasizes 'State'.

&tate should have never have been pushed the way it was. But since everyone got all giddy after the baseball title, the vocal minority saw an opportunity to strike and take advantage of the inferiority complex.

But making everyone happy isn't what MSU does, is it? Who are we without a bunch of infighting and few m17ers causing a stir about nothing. While I'm happy that we've seemingly found a consistent helmet logo, we all should agree that it should not be some sort of independent front facing 'main' logo. The only logo we have that should do that is the baseball M over S.

I actually don’t disagree with you. I don’t think the banner should go away. I just think it looks like complete dogshitte on a football helmet.

so let me rephrase: The majority of fans hate the banner on the helmet. I don’t think that can be argued.

I can agree with all this.

However even with the helmet drop there were many on Twitter taking shots at the university logo.

I learned coaching little kids. You can't make everyone happy. Someone has to be the boss. And if other people say, "Dey lied to me". Or blah blah blah, So be it.

I dont know the timing on all of this, but the year we switched to the script State, 2023, is also the year Adidas started offering gear with the interlocking MSU logo. This stuff doesnt happen overnight. SOMEONE knew the logo was available and chose script State instead.

I agree with Rosey when he says that a few loudly hate, and many don't care. I'm the latter. I've been quoted many times saying I don't care what the helmet logo is, but I certainly never HATED the official logo on it. I was actually ok with &tate on it every once in a while.

Right, and hopefully that person is now Keenum though I think he kinda got duped by the &tate hysteria too, we know we can get excited over a big sports wins (2019 Egg Bowl anyone?).

Just because NIKE no longer claims an ownership interest in the interlocking MSU logo today, that does not mean anyone lied about NIKE's ownership in the early 2000's. Things can change.

I dont listen to Steve's podcast, but I will try to listen to it later...but the synopsis above is nonsense.

It never made sense to me that NIKE would own the trademark rights, but if NIKE designed the logo then maybe its contract with State gave it ownership rights, with a license back to State.

No one has ever applied to register the interlocking MSU as a trademark, so we dont get any info there. It was reported on Sixpack that some smaller school was using the logo after State quit using it, which lends some credence to the claim NIKE owned it.

Regardless, if you stop using a trademark in commerce, then you lose your rights. If NIKE stopped using the interlocking MSU, then it has no rights regardless of a prior contract with State.

Whoever designed the logo could claim copyright ownership, but we can only presume that's not an issue.

We've never had a consistent branding amongst the big 3 programs so I don't see why consistency would be valued now. And I'm pretty comfortable that the general public would barely notice if we ditched the script given our recent football history.

Bring back the interlock for football. Keep the M-State/banner branding for general university marketing, letterhead, signage, etc. The shape is fine for that. The shape is SHITE for a football helmet. Why? I can't explain it. Look at it. It just is. It's soft looking on a helmet.

One thing that's being lost that all the angry Gen Xers aren't telling us, is that is was tough to want to continue ANYTHING from the Kang Era after 2003. We all look fondly on it now, and the nostalgia came back pretty quickly once Croominator started losing.........but if you lived during that time, it's hard to argue that we all didn't need a huge break from the way MSU football was doing things. Even if it wasn't that bad with Jackie....and it was exaggerated.......the way we lost to end the year in 2002 and just were hapless in 2003, left an awful taste in everyone's mouth, much worse than the taste in @paindonthurt's mouth after he hangs out with Selmon. Many of the loudest interlocking guys were the ones wanting the Kang fired. Just facts.

It's all pretty ironic, sitting here over 20 years later. I loved the Kang back in the day, but I mean the guy identifies more with aTm than he does us. So I personally don't understand all the love for this logo, but I also don't really care about that particular part.........so may as well roll with it if it jazzes up our soon-to-be-blue-hair-in-a-few-years fans and makes them donate more.

Steve did NOT say Nike owned the logo.

He said Mississippi State University owned "the mark"(he didn't give dates) and allowed the trademark to expire (sometime before 2021).

August 15 show. Starts around 10minute of show.

We've had the banner M now for almost 30 years. It's the most consistency we've ever had. That's the issue. Agree no one would care about &tate. Again, it was just a preliminary strike against the banner M by the angry folks.

Bring back the interlock for football. Keep the M-State/banner branding for general university marketing, letterhead, signage, etc.
Most agree. The issue is the gap where the banner M used to be and where the &tate is now.

That's what doesnt make sense. No one ever registered the mark, so there was nothing to expire. And certainly nothing Steve could buy. But Ill listen when I have some time.

I never had a strong opinion on the helmet logo, other than I wish we would pick one and stick with it. The Banner M grew on me over time, while I generally do not like the Script State.

But that Maroon helmet at the end of the video yesterday gave me goosebumps.

OTOH, I bought an interlocking MSU Adidas golf shirt two years ago, and I hate it.
