Thunder & Lightning: Mississippi State Basketball Is Missing its Identity

A season ago, Mississippi State made the NCAA Tournament by winning ugly. Now the Bulldogs seem to have lost that defensive edge that made them such a tough team in Chris Jans’s first year as head coach. Brian Hadad and Robbie Faulk as if the Bulldogs can get that intensity back as they face a must win game against Vanderbilt.

That ain't ALL it's missing!

We’re not quite as good as we were defensively last year but we’re still good. Just ran into some elite offenses lately. The first two months of the season we played really good defense for the most part. I suspect we’ll play better soon.

In any sport you have to have what I think of as + guys. That is players that are going to give you an advantage most nights due to a particular attribute or skill. In baseball we had that one year with Bednar, Sims, and the near .400 version of Tanner Allen. In basketball we had it with Dampier & Jones. Ladies had it with McCowan & Vivians.

Jans doesn’t strike me as a recruiter of that level of player. If he is then he needs to go off in the portal like few of us can envision happening. It doesn’t need to be better than last year’s portal efffort, it needs to be LIGHT YEARS better.
