First, I was there the first hour and forty-five minutes. I didn't see any of the 11-on-11 stuff. But otherwise, I'll just jump around because there's a lot of stuff going on at the same time. Plus, it's first day and hard to tell much.

RBs
Elliot has bulked up, no doubt. He looks like an SEC running back.
Montrell is a specimen.
Perkins and Ballard look like they'll be good backs. Perkins looks smooth.
Overall, I'd say I feel better about the new backs after seeing them today. Looks like the first four could make some plays in the spread.

WRs
Sanders is quick as hell. Heavens seemed a lot faster than I noticed last year. Bumphis is Bumphis. They all looked a little bigger. Leon Berry looks a helluva lot more comfortable with everything that's going on and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a pretty good year with somebody to throw it to him.

DL
Carmon is a freakin' beast. I kinda doubted that he was down to 345 but he looks nothing like the fat boy in his recruiting pics last year. When you look at McPhee, Boyd, Cox, and Carmon, that's a pretty serious sized four dudes. Ferguson was out there but relegated to the last team. McKenzie looks like he's ready to play.

OL
All appeared in pretty good shape and moved around well.

DBs
Zach was back. Nickoe Whitley and Zach were second team safeties for now. Couldn't tell much else. Banks has put on a few pounds and Damien Anderson seemed pretty into it.

QBs
They're big. Russell and Relf look like SEC QBs, which is strange considering what we're accustomed to. When Relf throws the ball well, it looks like it's on a line. Just a strong, nice throw. But sometimes it ain't where it's supposed to be, no surprise. But he looked comfortable. Russell has some tools. Throws a nice, nicepass. This is the first time I've seen him as I never make it in from the Junction until about two minutes before kick. Stegall has a weird motion and not that strong an arm. Not today anyway.

Other stuff
I like Manny Diaz. It's like somebody lit his hair on fire. He constantly talks about a running motor and everybody getting there and so forth and he drops F bombs that could easily be heard from 80 yards away, which will make him a message board anti-christ somewhere any minute now. I get the feeling he and Wilson will be good moves.

There were some new formation wrinkles in the option game and also more use of the WRs in the option game.

For some reason, we still wear those ugly ***, cutoff maroon pants from the Croom era, which makes me want to puke. Can't adidas buck up and get us some new practice gear?

And lastly, by far the biggest thing I noticed today was Mullen. Last year, every practice, he was very vocal, very hands on, doing a lot of teaching, hustling from unit to unit. His voice was always heard. Today, much different. He let the coaches do the coaching. He moved around, more observant, stopping here and there to teach, but mainly acting like a head coach versus an assistant coach. Which made me realize that last year was probably a big curve for the assistants and not just the players as everyone had to figure out how it was going to be done. The mood, pace, and so forth, was much more efficient and crisp than anything I saw last year, which is to be expected, but nice to see nonetheless.

ETA: For the first time since God knows when, I couldn't find a position on the field where we really have to hope that the freshmen can come and contribute immediately. Looks like they could all probably redshirt if need be.

I had a feeling that our RB situation would be better than a lot think. This, at least, doesn't bump my thinking. Glad to hear it.
As for Carmon, I wanna see some pics. If he's not a fatboy, I'm gonna get a little wooly. I love that everyone's been bulking up.
Also, nice that you included Mullen's change.
Well done, Sir.

I feel some wool growing. This is MSU's best team on paper in a good while. Of course we will have to see how Russell and the new running backs pan out, but it looks like we are solid pretty much everywhere and we're stillrelatively young. Also, glad to see Elliot has bulked up. I think his main problem was he was on the field too soon after that knee injury. I fully expect him to resemble a different player this season.</p>

Thanks and please continue this reporting as the camp progresses.

That kid almost looks AD size. I didn't realize he was that big. The redshirt freshmen look great and I agree that this class coming in could all redshirt and we wouldn't be hurting any

I would have been happy just to hear "no serious injuries today". So everything else is a bonus.

My few observations:<div>
</div><div>1. Tyler Russell has a rocket arm, even on the short throws. He needs to reel in his accuracy a little bit, but I'm excited about his future.</div><div>2. Manny Diaz is 17ing intense. He had the defense doing up-downs when they didn't get to the ball quick enough in team drills. I think we will be very glad Mullen brought him in.</div><div>3. Vick Ballard is going to be a threat out of the backfield passing-wise. He looked really smooth catching passes out of the backfield.</div><div>4. LaDarius Perkins is shifty and quick as hell. I hope we utilize him this Fall.</div><div>5. We were practicing a lot of WR motion option plays; I like the innovation.</div>

top notch analysis. the roster sheet seemed to underscore some of their weight marks but then again I don't hang out with D1 Atheletes on a regular basis either. Mullen was definitely calm today and he worked with Russell and Relf a good bit. Relf's agility over Russell definitely shows on the hurdling and other mobility drills. Russell is most definitely the surgeon of the bunch but Relf will be great for Tyler this year to bring relief when relf's accuracy starts to drift. Hell I wouldn't mind relf in as tight end with his size and atheleticism but that is my far fetched opinion. Looked great in drills as thunder so eloquently told but bring on the scrimmages and let's see the dawgs get dirty.

also, boobie was there and could easily eat the keyboard I'm typing on. Gene was also there snapping shots for his flock. I swear he is George Sherman without hair gel

I was mostly focused on the RBs. While Elliott looks a lot bigger, his hands are failing him. Coach Knox was working on swing passes out of the back field for most of the time. Elliott had to drop at least 10 passes while I was watching. Choo Choo wasn't any better, he dropped just as many. Ballard looked the best catching passes out of the backfield. He looked smooth and rarely dropped one. Perkins looked really good too. Going back to Elliott. Whenever the offense got to run some plays together the first play they called was a sweep to Elliott and he dropped the ball. Even though he has a SEC body, I dont feel comfortable with him in the backfield. I would look for Ballard to get the bulk of the load this year. Also, Coach Knox really impressed me, he has a motor that never stops. He never stopped teaching, he was intense the whole time with the RBs.

Is he a full-time safety, or does he get some time at WR? I think someone mentioned that he was listed as an ATH on the spring roster.</p>

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed. Our practice gear is so bush league it's not even funny.

Also, I kind of dig the stripe on the qb's helmet. I think the helmet would look good with some kind of silver strip (maybe a Bronco's style strip) or something like that. That's just me though.
