Anonymous message board poster posted the following and I felt it was solid info...

http://www.nems360.com/pa...dary_stories_left_column
A message board post at the Ole Miss Spirit site on Sunday, just prior to the Rebels' opener at Memphis, reported that Patterson - ranked the No. 4 high school receiver by Rivals.com last season - was required to re-take the test and was monitored by an NCAA official while taking the test.

This ******** is beyond laughable. Hey, Parrish and daily journal, you are officially a joke, as if that was ever a question. Citing a message board? Really? Hey Parrish, cite this: "I just saw Parrish Alford wiping off while standing 3 feet behind a gurnsey. He's been known to be partial to brunettes."

The ACT focused on Patterson's original test score after it received a call from a Mississippi State supporter who works at Noxubee County High School, the post said.
This is about as bad as journalism gets.

Heres the post he's referring to from Yancy Porter.

**Do not know if this has hit the net or not, but my Noxubee County source is telling me that a MSU supporter that works at Noxubee County's high school called the NCAA and said they thought there was some hanky panky going on when Pat Patterson took the ACT test at Noxubee County this summer when he made a 20.

For the first time I have been in the business, that I know about, the NCAA made Pat retake the ACT test this week after being declared eligible the first time.

The NCAA sent someone to monitor him taking the test this week.

Pat made another 20 on the test and has been re-cleared.

I could just read messageboards all day and pick a few things to run with. Hell, I read the sixpack all day anyways. Might as well get paid for it. It's on a messageboard so it must be true.

For the conspiracy theory enthusiasts, this is a pretty clear example of the OM machine at work. Years ago, it was also rumored that the person that turned in Gilliard (?) for the clothing discount (that was available to all students) that got Bob Tyler's career busted was an OM supporter: however, it was not posted on an internet message board because I don't think the Al Gore had invented the internets yet.

You'd be amazed at how many people really believe Wikipedia is a legitimate source. I worked in plenty of class groups where I would compile the final draft of whatever paper we were writing, and there would be multiple references coming from Wikipedia, and I even had one instance where I found out one of my group members was blatantly plagiarizing from Wikipedia, though if you plagiarize a source that isn't legitimate, is it really plagiarizing at all?

On the original topic, can you really claim it was an anonymous message board poster when the poster's handle was 'yancyporter'?

I had to correct her (the teacher - and they love that btw) and told my daughter to never do that.

It's really a shame.

it is a very good starting point to get some general information about a topic and links to legitimate sources.

I'll agree with that. I'd never cite it in a paper, but it's definitely a good place to go to get some background information to start with. I'm just amazed people think it's legitimate enough to cite.

When you can use the Spirit as a news source. What an embarrassment.

Trust me, Alford makes Locke look like a Pulitzer winner on a daily basis. The guy can barely write complete sentences.

I would always go to Wikipedia to find the general information. Then I would use the references they used to verify and/or get further details.

Alford's their "good" beat writer (at least he is now). I have no idea how Gregg Ellis didn't go insane working at that place.
