Couch was great, and he was one tough hombre. I remember Florida just knocking his *** off and he just kept standing in there and delivering strikes. After the game, I think it was Javon Kearse, who said Couch was the most impressive Quarterback they had faced. He sure earned their respect.

You've got to be kidding.
Couch was good, and hamstrung by the following:
1. Mumme's system didn't just not prepare him for the NFL, it didn't even try. There were reports that Couch had never been taught to read a defense properly. Mumme's system was spray and pray, essentially.
2. If you think Cleveland was a mess now, they were even more of a mess then. Had to build from nothing as an expansion team, insane front office, incompetent old school coach, probably the worst o-line in the modern era, one competent WR, no RBs, horrible defense. He was David Carr before David Carr.
3. Every other first round pick in his era failed to do much
4. Tore his shoulder up and never recovered.
Interstingly, he's still the Browns all time leader in completion percentage... at 59%. That should tell you all you need to know about Cleveland. (took that from wikipedia, appears to be wrong, but there may be some sort of games played cutoff)

I totally agree with the LSU game down there. That place was loud and he just picked them apart He made a lot of short throws, but making those throws in spots in which the receiver or running back can run after the throw was vital. He had great poise and if it was 3rd and 13, you realistically thought you had a chance at a first down. Tim was a great quarterback.

Loved Couch and he was as good as advertised. Threw too many picks, but still was over 2:1 TD/INT ratio.
I think Couch was the best to play at UK, followed pretty closely by Woodson. Woodson's TD/INT ratio was amazing and he threw a great deep ball.

Cleveland is where good QB'S go to die...Couch wasn't the first nor the last. Unfortunate situation Tim got put in but in the end, being a millionaire, married to Heather Kozar, and eternally loved by the BBN isn't too bad a life for a kid from Leslie County. He's a winner in my book.
Lots of us forget just how good of an athlete Tim was. He average 36 points a game in high school as a Junior and according to ESPN was Mr. Basketball. He is listed as number 6 on the All Time Greatest High School Athletes.

Nice list, and he is in some great company, thanks. And his 36 points a game as a JUNIOR in high school AND Mr Basketball should even impress some of our basketball fans, I might have been thinking of what he averaged as a senior, still VERY impressive, 36 as a junior pretty amazing.
Not sure I should even bother, but how long did Yeast and his other receivers play in the NFL? Last I heard Johnson and Tamme were still playing, Burton was just emerging when he got injured, and Lyons could have made it if not for injuries.
And Little was also hampered by injuries but almost made the NFL, and one of his biggest assets was catching the ball, he was highly ranked as an all purpose back.
As far as that goes how many games did Woodson start in the NFL, not that he wasn't a great player for UK.

Not sure I'm getting your point. College vs Pro's is apples and oranges. You have guys all the time that are great in one but not in the others. College greatness doesn't equate to NFL greatness, nor does College averageness equate to NFL averageness (my word, deal with it! ha ha)

Yes they both played the same position. Woodson was the more polished passer, IMO (for college).
It's hard to get a persons point when they just talk a lot and don't really get to the point. Also not sure why you get so pissy about differing opinions.
It was difficult for Tim to throw the long ball when he was laying on his back. A lot of College teams had a better offensive line then Cleveland. Tim didn't have the strongest arm I have seen in football, but he had one of the most accurate arms and quick releases I have seen in football. When at Cleveland, he very seldom got 2 seconds before the DL was on top of him. At Cleveland, he never had time for the play to develop, before the offensive line was on him. Put him on a decent team and he would have been great.

Woodson was not better than Couch. Woodson was a fine QB, but wasn't even considered to be top 3 in the SEC. Tim Couch was standing on a Heisman stage and obviously showed enough talent in NFL tryouts to be the first overall selection. I don't even think Woodson took an NFL snap. Nothing negative to Woodson, but Couch was one of the all time greats to play at UK.
At their peaks Couch and Woodson were very close as college QBs. They had 4 of the top 5 single season QB ratings at UK in the last 40 years and probably ever based on 200 min attempts. Probably top 2 career. This said, with a game on the line and 2 minutes left on the clock, I want Woodson taking the snaps. Couch was a good QB in the clutch; but Andre was great.

More Couch v Woodson. In my observation, Couch threw more picks because he always felt he could complete the pass and would sometimes try to force the ball into coverage.
Woodson sometimes went too far trying to avoid risky throws. A drive killing sack and potential fumble isn't always the best alternative to a potential pick downfield.

All this talk about poor Timmy and mean old Cleveland got me to thinking about other QB's who suffered after draft day.
Anybody remember that poor guy that ended up in Indianapolis? That poor dude threw more picks and stayed on his back so much the first couple of years it was insane. I feel sorry for the poor feller to this day.

Couch set the record for being sacked the most in one year. No coincidence that his record was broken by Carr behind the Texans' expansion team offensive line.
If only the Browns would have taken Donovan McNabb instead. Couch would have been drafted by the Eagles and his career would have been completely different and much longer.
The Browns were horrendous. No way should an expansion team ever draft a QB until they get their offensive line solidified.

That's a good point about Couch and McNabb. I think Couch and the Browns would have been better off had it worked out the way you suggested.
If you weren't criticizing this staff after that 0-2 start and how terrible we looked then I have to seriously question your motives. Early in the season we looked as bad as I've ever seen a UK football team look and they deserved all the criticism that came their way..Stoops would be the first to agree with me..I know that hurts you to read, but it's the truth little guy. To start with not only did you disrespect the best GROUP of WRs that UK ever had, JMO, but you disrespected Couch with your "cocky" label, and in fact you need to have a lot of confidence to play with the big boys AND it was justified. His play backed it up. Then he DID stay loyal to his home state and did a lot for UK, in addition to continuing to do a lot for UK.
I think about every knowledgeable poster on here agrees that he had a ton of help with his "failures" at Cleveland.

None of those attributes are relevant. The best QB in modern era"Brady" was a 5th round draft pick. I'm not saying he wasn't great but I'm wondering how'd he do in pro set during college. He seemed to struggle in deep routes.

He averaged 28 soph year,, 36 Jr year,, 25 Sr year and never really even tried.. He'd drain 3s 6-7' behind the line like it was nothing.. Played to stay in shape.. Had a few 50 pt games and a 60..
