From an neutral observer going to watch a good football game i have to ask the question was this the first g ame the clock keeper had ever kept the clock or did he just not have a clue when to stop or start the game clock? The head official had to continually stop the game to tell the person when to start the clock. Also near the end of the of the game a holding call was called and i was under the impression that the clock would not start till the ball was snapped but he let the clock continue to run. That said ,a great game by both teams and its a shame one of the teams had to lose. # 9 for Gretna a Great player............

First, the clock operator is part of the officiating crew. So it makes no difference if you were neutral, there is no home cooking at varsity level. 2nd, I was at a game tonight where offense had holding on 1st and goal, clock wound again after they marked it off. In theory, they could have done that play after play, and run out the clock going backwards.

Also, as someone who sits next to the official running the clock every game, there is a wide variety of talent at that job. Just about all of them would rather be on the field.

UTcrazy is right. The clock operator had no idea when to start or stop clock. The ref should have stopped the game and gone to press box and got clock operator straight.

My son is 8, and he has run the clock for Powder Puff for 3 years now. Some clock refs can't do it as well as my boy.

Your first words were to point out you were a neutral observer. The only point of mentioning that was to establish that you were not complaining because your team was screwed by clock operator.

That was the most obvious cheating between refs and clock keepers all involved that I have ever seen in 15 years of high school football. If anyone their can be happy with that officiating that says alot about the person they are. About twenty calls that were not even close plus the five personals on sidelines for arguing them calls. Refs handed that game to WC on a platter period. But don't worry can put up video if you can stomach it.

The time keeper has the easiest job. You take your cues from the white hat, simple as that. If he winds it, you wind it. If he stops it, you stop it. Having said that, most of the clock issues I've seen have been the referee's fault, not the time keeper's.

As an aside, the scoreboard at James River was broken. If there were any clock issues, we never would have known.

I have never been to Gretna or WC. And if you have reading comprehension, I fully disclosed that some of those guys are awful, some are good. Doing the clock is the crap job on the crew.

The clock red also has to write down all penalties. But yes, it is the least physically demanding, which is why refs who get to old or slow to work the field get the press box duty.

Keeping the clock is just as important as making the correct calls on the field.i dont have any problem comprehending that concept thus i believe whomever was on the clock tonight should consider another sport, maybe checkers. As i said earlier i have no dog in this fight just made a observation but you tried to put your own words into my post.......

No "ref" keeps the clock. It is usually a parent, coach or teacher volunteering their time to help out the team. Official time is kept on the field always. As a former volunteer clock operator, I can tell you that sometimes the ref forgets to signal for the clock to stop and start. I always looked for the refs signal. Did I mess up sometimes, sure. Sometimes it's hard to see in a crowd of people what the ref signalled, especially on close sideline plays. Give the refs a break, they get paid very little, give the parents who volunteer their time to work the clock a break and watch the game and quit thinking you or somebody else would do it better, because they can't. We are all human and not perfect. If your school is paying an extra ref to keep the clock, it's not a wise financial decision., for sure. You have people lining up to do it for free. It's a great view of the game out the elements, best seat in the house.

I don't know where you are, but every varsity game covered by the Winchester Officials Association has clock operator provided by refs.

Our school systems from my area can't afford buses to get the kids to the games, much less pay an extra ref.

Down here in the rural southern portion of the state our schools don't have the big bucks of the more prominent areas of the state. One school I was at had an athletic operating budget of $5000...for all sports. Clock operators are volunteering or get a very small stipend. All you have to do is pass a simple test to be able to do so.

For the last 40+ years, the same guy has run the clock at Page County High School. Hes a graduate of PCHS and a community member. Not a ref.

School officials were running the clock. I have never seen refs have to stop the game so many times but never correct the clock. WC ran 1:20 off clock without ever snapping ball. Ref stopped game twice during that play to try get operator to stop clock but never corrected. Ran for 20 seconds while ref is blowing whistle looking up at clock operator. First time I have ever seen clock run during change of possession with both teams not even on the field.

We've never had a problem here at Marion.

Shortly before the game a Town of Marion policeman goes up on the hill above Marion to pick up a clock keeper at the hospital...it's a system that has worked for years.

Part of it, the other part is still the State Psychiatric Hospital. Then the old administration building was updated and converted into Smyth County Administration Offices.

We still refer to it as "Up on the Hill" although many of us think it's appropriate that the county has offices up there.

Most clock operators are not refs. they come from community. I know of one school that uses same person for PA announcer and clock operator. On top of that, he tries to be Offensive and defensive coordinator, and even cheerleader coach. Every time opponent drops to pass, he yells out pass over PA.

It does sit on the hill. Love the state Park there.
Our new community hospital also sits on top of a hill...sometimes our newbies are confused as to what we mean by "on the hill".

Hungry Mother Park is awesome and they have 2 zip lines up there now.

I use to work for Department of Corrections. Our Western Region training facility and where I had my quarterly meetings is on the hill right between the prison and hospital. Very pretty in the area. Sometimes took the scenic route back on 16 I think it is through Mouth of Wilson, by Oak Hill, and to Grayson on 58 to home.

Aye...to me St Rt. 16 South is a better drive/ride than the Back of the Dragon over to Tazewell.

Denali...AKA Mt McKinley.

I snapped the picture as we were returning from work back to Anchorage on an Alaska Airlines charter flight. I just pointed the camera out the plane window.

It was a couple of days before I checked my camera for the picture and I was surprised how well it turned out.
