Moved up in which ranking? There are really only two definitive rankings the sight and sound top 250 critics poll that comes out ever ten years and the sight and sound top 100 according to directors. Shawshank isn't on either list and never will be.

What is not to like about Shawshank? That movie is amazing, its a great story, with great acting. Some of us like to watch a movie to get away from our SERIOUS jobs, to hear a good tale, to be entertained.

I like Shawshank. SERIOUSLY. It's a really good film. And I agree with everything you said. But there are reasons it's not ranked on the lists I mentioned or considered an influential film by film makers. Didn't mean to insinuate it was a bad film or you're dumb for liking it. Audience, critics, directors, actors, writers, etc all watch movies differently and for different reasons.

I haven't seen any universally classic black & white movies except for 12 Angry Men (my favorite movie ever) & Judgment at Nuremburg.

Specific movies listed in this thread that I haven't seen:

Back to the Future
Big Lebowski
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
ET
Godfather (1 & 2)
Gone with the Wind
Fargo
Harry Potter (any)
Lord of the Rings (any)
Miracle on 34th Street
Pulp Fiction
Usual Suspects

I really want to see most of these and hopefully will one day.

I've seen Bridge on the River Kwai and Great Escape, though! And Jaws! And Star Wars! And Indiana Jones! And Heavyweights! I'm not a total freak!

JMO, but 12 Angry Men, Judgement at Nuremberg and The Grapes of Wrath should be REQUIRED viewing.

I don't know if/where it ranks on anyone's list of all-time classic movies, but it's certainly a sci-fi classic--- 1968's Planet Of The Apes just happens to be playing at some local (N. Cincy) theaters tomorrow. It'd be a kick to see it on the big screen.

One thing though, and for the life of me I don't understand why they did it, but they used a very key* scene for the movie poster. Maybe they thought everybody already knows about the scene and the story, so it wouldn't be thought of as a spoiler... but after reading this thread, I'm sure some of you wouldn't be familiar.

(*I'm being vague... just in case)

Raiders of the Lost Ark is for the nerds? WTF? Might be the worst take in the history of the Paddock. It's one of the greatest movies ever. And I've probably seen it 100 times. Just fantastic from beginning to end.

But if Indy wasn't in the movie... the Nazi's would still get the Ark, take to the island and still die when they open it.

I think Lawrence of Arabia is a classic with great cinematography, how many not seen that?

Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Gone With the Wind
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
The Sound of Music

I'll admit that I have never had an interest to watch any of those, or a lot of other "classics". I'm a sucker for visual stimulation, and rarely watch a movie for the dialogue. Not to be a total POS, "classics" I still enjoy:

Fantasia
Sergeant York
E.T.
Wizard of Oz
Jaws
Alien

I've had the chance to watch A Clockwork Orange several times on netflix or other ways, but always found something else I wanted to watch more.
Citizen Kane and Dr. Strangelove....never had a desire at all. I mean if I wanted to sound cool and hip and watch them to say I watched them....nah. I like what I like.

Fair enough. Definitely the only reason people watch them is so they can twirl their handle bar mustaches and shallowly discuss them over a couple cortados.

Haha I know. Ive experienced it. It's funny to watch when you press them to go a little further. Makes me feel like that Willy Wonka meme.
Willy Wonka! Another awesome one that I HAVE watched.

I just get annoyed by people who talk about movies like they're a damn film student or movie critic...unless they are one. It's pretentious and has the opposite effect of it's intent.

Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, allaboutUK? Children's ice cream!...You know when fluoridation began?...1946. 1946, allaboutUK. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
