I apologize for not being clear. I suppose it would’ve been better to say their “backup choices”.
No, you’re fine. It was actually on me for not asking earlier. I’ve probably debated you a few times on this topic and never stopped to ask. I’d also like Pope to get his first options. I don’t know that’s sustainable, but it’s hard to argue it’d be nice

I can’t square both:

- We spent $22M on a roster
- JMI prevents us from signing players NIL

If you can, more power to you. To me, this wreaks of bias to have the cake and eat it too. I think your second paragraph would probably do a much better job of explaining a $22M roster while also having many “misses.” It would also help explain another point that is seldom brought up. Pope doesn’t refer to any of those as misses, but rather as the players showing their level of fit. Minutes, role, etc not being promised would match the agents’ description of how Pope handles recruiting. Doesn’t like promises, doesn’t like bidding wars —- because “we are Kentucky.”

You can easily square both if JMI is limiting players ability to seek additional sources of NIL outside of the framework of their affiliated partners. You could also easily square it by saying we clearly overspent for inferior players. Is Otega Oweh worth $2M right now?

Pope doesn't refer to them as misses because A.) He's too nice to speak in a way that would appear disparaging towards his current team and B.) He's too nice to get into "dirty" recruiting. He wants to keep an image so he's doing and saying everything he can to that end.

The promises and bidding wars thing in 2025 is a huge problem and something he either needs to resolve or find an exit door. An easy solution is hiring a GM so he just needs to come to the table and pitch his program.

Why would top recruits NOT want to play for him? Is he farting during in-home visits?

NBA type players are not going to play in a system
people get this wrong all around.

Pope runs a true system, it one of the reasons why we are struggling this year. In his system, there are no stars, no focal points, and the only time you see someone take over is if you had to have a shot. Elite kids don't want to play in a system like that, so I guess in a way you can blame Pope, but not for the reasons people are using here and this isn't a pope problem as far as that particular area. You can see what selfish mentality gets you..... it gets you 6-4.

We just spent 22 mil on a bball team and people are still crying about NIL money, which to me is crazy. Now, I think that 22 mil is inflated, and I think we can manage it better sure but the point is - money is not the issue. People cry about Mitch- but to accuse an AD of sabotaging a program is funny at best, mental at worst. Many people need to accept times have changed, we aren't as attractive as we used to be in this new world, history doesn't matter to this new breed nor does the name on the chest and players can accomplish any goal they want from any school in America when winning a title is not your goal. Mix that with even equal money and young kids will go where things are "cooler" every time over Lexington, KY.... every time.

All of you complaining about top 50 talent - which is wild to me, but fail to realize the last time we brought in consistent top 10 talent was over a decade ago and we never did before that. Cal's first 5 years were the only years this program has ever consistently brought in top 5 talent based off fake rankings against other high school kids mind you, but I digress. You don't need top 5 talent to win, that is a myth.

Most of you also need to realize, being an AD is more than Basketball and football when you find it ok to care about it.
I’ve been saying this for a while. The problem is not NIL with recruiting elite talent. The guys that believe they are NBA bound are not going to a system.

But the system doesn’t need those guys. It needs players that fit the system.

Some will develop into NBA guys and that’s a good thing.

Pope should really forget about high school freshmen and focus on portal guys that fit his system.

That’s on offense. If Pope has a defensive ideal I have no idea what it is.

He needs to get an idea and focus or hire someone that does. And leave that guy alone.

Right now if there’s a clear plan and defined path to get there no one knows what it is.

That is a leadership failure.

We have a top down problem.

No. I just showed you 12 sources that confirmed the $22 million. You asked for those sources and I provided them.

Now you either need to shut down your baseless argument, or provide the one thing I've asked for, and that is any quote from anyone in the UK athletic department or the Kentucky basketball coaching staff that refutes the $22 million report.

Can you provide that quote?

I'll be waiting.

Again, Pope was the coach when Stokes and Collins were supposed to be locks. Gotta be something other than Pope.
Exactly. Collins was at the table with pen in hand. Something spooked him and it wasn’t like he all of a sudden said, “Wait I just realized you are a different person than the one that’s been recruiting me for a year”.

Pope is getting people to the table. Then the deal breaks down.

It’s interesting that one of the anonymous agents said Pope gets too emotional during the business side of things. Easy fix: he has nothing to do with the money. His only line about money should be “we’re UK, the bean counters will get your money and we won’t be outbid for you”.

I said it in another thread but this actually makes me feel better about Pope long term. He needs to understand things are different now and he just needs to get over the money aspect. I have full confidence this is a lesson he can learn. He talked about the reevaluation of everything and how painful it is. I think Pope is a smart enough guy to know what role he’s playing in this and how to correct it.

Best way to do that is take him out of that part of the equation by hiring a UK basketball GM. And fix whatever ******** broken model UK and JMI are running.

You clearly seem upset about the wrong things. It's obvious no one knows for sure but if the general consensus is that it was in excess of 20 million, why refute it?

If we spent 10 million for this roster it was too much.

What makes you think everyone is making up the same number?
I'm not sure but it could be that everyone is just repeating what the Herald Leader reported without any detailed clarification. The disconnect seems to be in asking kids to sign away all NIL rights to JMI. It is being reported UK is the only one doing that. So it may be true that the players got 22 million up front but because of the the JMI structure UK may not actually be out even half of that when all is said and done. It would depend on the deals they are getting to recoup that expense and subsequently cutting the players out of. By the same respect other schools collectives may have less out up front but the deals the players (agents or reps) are able to get on their own puts the player's total compensation much higher while not going back into the schools or collectives coffers.

Pope has never had or really even recruited top level players until coming to UK. He has 0 track record of 1st rd or lottery picks. 0 track record of winning anything of substance. And he has little to no NBA background to help that.

The UK brand will keep us as a hat on the table for a while. However, we aren't actually winning the recruitment.
1000%. Recruiting is the most important aspect of college sports. We gave the keys to the best program to a guy who wasn’t proven.

I think the issue with the money isn't the amount necessarily (in this case the 22 mil certainly looks like it was spent poorly) but the restrictions that are now necessarily placed on any player signing with us making the amount we negotiate more of a hard cap. Also, the 22 mil was prior to the JMI contract so we'll see if a similar dollar amount remains available going forward. But it sounds like some of the issue might be that the top players want more flexibility in their ability to market themselves and I have no doubt that in the hypercompetitive world of basketball recruiting that if we constrain what players are able to do marketing-wise in any way that is more restrictive than other schools - that will be put on blast mode by every school we are going against in a recruiting battle.

What UK spent on the current team is irrelevant to the current state of recruiting. Those current roster deals were agreed to PRIOR to the anti-trust agreement, creation of the college sports commission and their related attempt to modify rules, creation of NILGo and their signing of the revised JMI contract.

Pope may or may not be the right guy but there 100% concerns about what is going on.
It relevant to whether pope is the right guy. Let’s use the jmi theory that’s it’s just now beginning. Pope couldn’t pull recruits to byu, couldn’t pull them to UK the first two years or up until now. We paid 22 million this year for a bunch of 6th men. So the money is there and everything I read about JMI makes it more of a problem for football because it doesn’t prevent finding more money for recruits. So I think it’s one of those it sucks for football so we must make it suck for bb. If you’re mark pope and you have stokes for instance there should be no bounds for what we might pay. No one can point to what the problem is in the contract that is hurting basketball.

listen I can’t stand Barney. I’ve been screaming about this dude since the joker debacle. Since then things just get worse and worse with this guy. I don’t buy his schtick. He doesn’t care if UK wins or loses. Barney is angling to land the sec commissioner or maybe ncaa or another conference. Barney and eli have become very tight and have created a good ole boys network. They brought stoops in then paid him life changing money to go away. I can’t tell you yow much crap I’ve heard about how great Barney is he’s a big money maker etc etc. I don’t know of a top 50 school losing money on athletics. We are in a new age where revenue streams 100s of ways. Barney hasn’t made that money that money has come based on other factors we could drop a chimp in a diaper with a contract at any partner and they are going to chip in. I don’t see why we can’t have a Kentuckian who is a money maker running athletics and the school/ trust then will never be a problem. With Barney and Eli I trust them less than cal.

He never had to recruit a big time prospect before at the other schools he coached and I think he’s having trouble with that here. He needs to learn how to play the game quick because if he doesn’t it will get ugly fast.
Too late! The cat (pun intended) is totally out of the bag and is scratching up the new furniture!

Pope can’t/ won’t come back from this! He doesn’t have the resume, he doesn’t have the experience, he doesn’t have the connections, and apparently, he doesn’t have the balls to operate as UK’s MCBB Head Coach.

Blaming it entirely on the NIL is just cope at this point. It’s clear that players don’t want to play for Pope.
I mean, Pope leaves BYU, and voila, they start landing studs! UK was landing studs, hires Pope, and voila, the studs go elsewhere!

I may not be the smartest man, but damn, an average 3 yr. old could tell me what the common denominator is here!

Ok. That’s not what I asked you. We’ve crossed paths about 800 times on this topic so I pressed pause to ask you, for future reference, what you specifically deem as a 1st tier or 2nd tier player.
Not speaking for that fan, but I’m pretty sure he meant 1st option/ 2nd option vs. 1st tier/ 2nd tier.

Regardless, he’s 100% correct!

I think Pope 100% thought Oweh would be the star his preseason hype suggested he would be. He was wrong with that.

I think either Pope wasn’t willing to pay what the very top-end guys were asking for or JMI wouldn’t allow him to play that much, maybe both. I also think Pope completely mismanaged the roster, likely by going for depth over top-end quality. HOPEFULLY he will learn from this year’s roster and do much better next year. People seem to be 100% forgetting that Pope vastly over-achieved with last year’s team. That probably wasn’t an accident. I really hope this year turns around but even if it doesn’t, I’m willing to give Pope another year to see if he can turn this around.

And at the end of the day it doesn‘t really matter because outside of Pope somehow breaching his contract (which I think is pretty unlikely), he will be back no matter what.
Pope being retained a 3rd season after everything that has, and will transpire, is about as close to zero, without actually being zero, that could possibly be!

I’ll go as far as, if he loses to IU and SJU, he might not make through this 2nd season!

Different era now, guys are paid like professionals, and like the professional leagues, coaches can, and will be replaced during the season, if the situation calls for it.

The part that most are forgetting is that the $22 million was almost all before the deals went through JMI. Since then, we have not gotten a single player to sign. We are so behind in every aspect of college sports it's insane.

"You come to the University of Kentucky, and you’re part of our family, and you get to use our things, but also that’s part of the relationship. There’s a responsibility and a right that comes with that.”"

"playing for the name on the front of jerseys, taking down NBA signage in the facility, publicly announcing you prefer portal experience and immediately recruiting over your highest-rated high school kids,"

All this coming to light is ironic because for years folks on this board would say these things regularly. They hated OAD players and being a pit stop on the way to the NBA. Recently fans want to fine/fire current players. Pope delivers on fans wishlist and when its a giant failure everyone is like: Fire Mitch, fire Pope, blow up JMI.

Pope has been a disaster this year so far but we UK fans deserve some of this.

Boosters will be livid if Pope ends up in the NIT. In that scenario I imagine it would be a 50:50 chance that Pope is heavily encouraged to resign at the end of the year. A losing season, which is looking ever more likely as we keep losing, would cause boosters to blow a gasket knowing they spent Ohio State football money on a record-breaking season for all the wrong reasons. I don’t understand any scenario where he’d be brought back with that kind of disaster.

The likeliest scenario I see Pope coming back is if he manages to salvage the season and go to the tournament. Basically if he pulls off a miracle, which isn’t likely.

I think Pope will need to show that some improvement is being made. I think an all systems failure with no sign of hope or improvement would likely end this before a year three. That’s no inside scoop, just reading the fanbase and assuming. However, if people believe he will get a third year or if people aren’t ready to fire the coach yet, can’t we just agree to disagree and get along? We all love the same school and want the same dominance, maybe have a slightly different view of how to get there.

I think Pope has gone away from his own mission.

He’s not going to get the OAD types to play in a system.

Nor will they if they did come. Nothing wrong with Pope’s system. I think he should focus on experienced portal guys that do fit his system and stick with it.

System coaches, Izzo, Tubby, Bennett, Bo, Pope, etc. do not get the OAD types.

It’s mixing oil and water if they do land one.

We don’t really know how well this team works because we haven’t seen the team that was put together.

Now should Pope have made better contingency plans? Absolutely!

We really don’t have an NIL problem. We have a direction problem.

Does anyone know for sure how Pope wants to play?

Does anyone know for sure what Pope’s defensive vision is?

What is the identity of a Pope led UK team?

It doesn’t seem that even Pope knows that answer.

That to me is a far bigger problem than JMI.

He’ll probably get another year if he somehow makes it to the tournament despite the adversity. But every loss pulls us closer and closer to not even making the NIT, much less the NCAA tournament.

That or if he manages to pull in Stokes. I could see boosters willing to let this season slide if Pope pulls in the #1 recruit in the class for next year.

But I’m becoming more confident that Pope has to “save” his job in some way to convince the boosters that he deserves the monetary support necessary to fund a good team next year. Once they close their checkbooks shut, he’s a dead man walking.

It’s an annoyance with this stuff. If you don’t produce at any SEC program you will be fired. Kentucky is the only place the AD will let you even be average joe and remain. Maybe Missouri, MSST. But we are definitely the only blue blood in football or basketball that will tolerate it at all. and even then, if you suck completely, you will be fired or forced out in some way. Yet we constantly see this idea time in and time out that “they’re not going anywhere” and it’s never held up yet, the same ones do this here over and over. They never learn how this works. So not a huge deal just an annoyance at this point.

If Mark sinks terribly and gets badly beaten through this conference he’s not coming back.

I feel you but the fans who are on the fence are not at fault for how the year is going. It’s a bad year for everyone, so I’d just ask you to understand where those people are coming from. Your view is the dominant view by a wide margin, there’s no need to pick up guns against the small huddle of people who need more time to give up hope.

I don’t even want Pope fired this second to be honest I don’t see the point. You’re misunderstanding. The same group of people time after time, yearly, with each coach, say “he’s not going anywhere”. It’s a constant theme. Even when it’s obvious, they still do it. They don’t know how these contracts work. If Mark bombs out this year you almost cannot bring him back. That’s the point I’m making. Not their current position, I’m talking about how it works. Mark winning 12 games this season and a bleak recruiting class means game over at any blue blood. Yet they will still say because of a contract and not enough years he will be brought back. He won’t.

I think reasonable minds can differ on certain things. I’ve found you to be pretty fair minded in the past and respect your opinion. Of course, what one person may feel is absolutely certain, another person may not. I can tell you I am passionate like you are. In my mind, I struggle with getting frustrated with people when it comes to roster construction. In my mind, some things are very, very, very obvious and other people just will never agree. I try to make it a point to be as persuasive and specific as I can, but also extend the olive branch, understanding that people can differ on these things reasonably. So I absolutely understand where you’re coming from with the frustration—- sometimes it just helps to think from the other viewpoint even if you don’t accept it. Makes the people seem less like enemies and more like fellow fans with a different perspective.

Thinking differently is fine as long as it’s under parameters that make sense. Maintaining a dead duck coach at an SEC program isn’t going to happen. So many of the same group have said over and over “cal ain’t leaving”, “Stoops isn’t leaving”
, “Joker won’t be fired after 2 years”, “Gillispie won’t be fired after 1 NIT” etc. it’s some of the same ones.

The point is at SEC programs you will not be retained if you are failing miserably. You will be removed. Pope doesn’t fit this right now, but he might by years end. The idea nothing could remove him isn’t true. We can differ on it but it doesn’t mean bad coach’s who are dead ducks are retained. It’s just not going to happen.

So that’s all I’m actually saying. Not that he won’t be back, that if he bombs out and that class is bad he can’t be brought back and won’t be. They can argue it, they’ll still be wrong. Just like they were many times before.

I personally believe that was what transpired. Went more in the direction of having lots of depth, but missing the key element of having at least 1 or 2 guys who can dominate regardless.

I'd rather have a couple elite guys surrounding by 6 quality role players and play with 8, than play in waves with 12 quality role players that don't necessarily complement each other very well.
Ala, how almost every NBA roster is constructed... two or three key guys and then enough good enoughs to fill out the roster.
