Minnesota QB couldn't run either so they beat us on quick / short routes. I hope we're prepared for that.
When the DBs sag 8-10 yards from LOS every play and no adjustments get made to that, you’ll get picked apart all day with quick and short routes. I remember it happening to us with TW many times as well. They stick with the ‘bend don’t break’ philosophy there I guess.

This is probably what I like about Matt the most. He is very real and honest about this. I know a lot of coaches hate it and a lot are kind of like "This sucks but it is part of the game now" attitude...but Matt seems to embrace that it is going to happen and that it is okay.
Sounds like he is willing to choose DR over TJ.

He is a bull *******, not honest. He has said a number of guys are NFL players, or high quality coaches who ended being trash.

Next 2 weeks will tell a lot about TJ. UCLA's defense isn't great but PSU and IA are both great defenses. Let's remember TJ vs usc in 1 half threw for 7 yards, fumbled 3 times and single handedly ended the comeback by tackling our running back. I want him to succeed and there to be a real competition next year, but if he struggles the next 2 weeks lets not be surprised.

I think I agree with you but fwiw I think whoever our QB is was gonna struggle against Iowa. Not sure how our OTs will hold up against either in obvious passing downs. keys to both games offensively is to stay on schedule and 3rd down efficiency. If Emmit cam have success we should be there at the end.

Defensively its stop the run or die imo.

Coaches are going to try to ride EJ the rest of the way. Don’t put too much on TJ yet. Help him minimize mistakes. Turnovers equal losses.

TJ was thrown to the wolves in that game and was poorly prepared. It was in his eyes when he went in. He was accustom to riding the pine.

Honest question: How was he poorly prepared? What specifically was/wasn't done in practice leading up to the game, or during the game, that would have resulted in being properly prepared?

To be fair, backups rarely get the same number of first team snaps. He was likely prepared like most other 2nd team QBs. I don’t think Kato was trying to imply that our coaches were negligent in his preparation. My personal belief is that he didn’t maybe prepare himself mentally to be thrust in to such a high stakes pressure situation. Even then, it would be a very rare freshman QB who could handle that extreme pressure. Sheet, I was jittery as a cat in a room full of pit bulls just watching from my recliner. Armpits sweating. Drinking excessively ….🥴

That makes sense. I didn't interpret it that way when initially reading Kato's post, but that certainly could have been the intent.

While he played great and it's awesome to see these stats... anytime they start reaching and throwing in extra things like "2 or fewer incompletions" you know it's not that "historic."

He was either not prepared or he **** the bed. He didn't know where to line up on the 4th and 1. He couldn't execute a simple handoff that ended the game. He looked scared/deer in the headlights.

All that being said, he was fantastic against UCLA, so major props to him and the coaching staff.

I think the coaches pissed their pants with that more than TJ did. I'm not going to blame TJ when he wasn't even given a chance to go out and win the game.

People can’t imagine the exactness that each play takes. We pretty much had the same QB in HS and one game he got hurt and everything was off a bit between me as the RB and the new QB. We are only talking about a couple inches in the middle of battle, it simply is to be expected and no really good way around it. I celebrate he didn’t appear to let it bother him as he went out did his job agains UCLA. Proud of kid, no matter what happens next. He is going to receive a lot of attention the next two games.

I would come hard off the edges and mix some zone blitz’s that will be hard to pick up. There could be some rough plays as well haven’t really shown the ability to pick up blitzes and stop the outside rush with our tackles. Keep EJ in to block and you are now down one more weapon. I would guess that is why we haven’t seen great TE production as well.
