You win the lottery as far as sales jobs go. Company A is paying you $1.2mm a year to be their only salesman, they give you the keys to a territory, and you have one main competitor in your region, Company B. It's a small territory, as far as national reps go, but hell - you can live a pretty good life on $1.2 mil.
If you increase sales, your company will reward you handsomely -- maybe bump your pay $500k, maybe offer you a longer term contract. Either way, it pads your retirement account, and you and your wife are loving life. You're the king daddy around here.
If, however, Company B does well in your area, it is a direct reflection on you. You're going head to head in many cases, and you're losing. Your company's stock drops, literally and figuratively, and you are almost solely to blame. You are the head of sales. Hell, if it gets too bad, they may fire you altogether and cut off your 1.2 MILLION DOLLAR PER YEAR salary.
I'm very certain I would try real damn hard to do everything I could to shine a positive light on my company in comparison to my competitor. I would fight like hell to keep my gig going. I might even muster some ill-will toward them, or tell a joke or two at their expense, just to make sure they were taken less seriously. Wouldn't you?
