especially against a pass-happy team--who will be the nickel back now?

This won't hurt us in our base defense, but it will hurt the nickle and dime packages.

I am hoping it is Washington at FS. If we put Bonner back there, especially a hobbled Bonner, against THIS team, we are toast. We need speed on the field, especially at FS. And we need sure tacklers at Safety to handle their dink and dunk stuff. Bonner has shown me neither.

Hell, where is Marvin Bure? He showed out in the spring game and scrimmages supposedly and is supposed to be one of the fastest players on the team.

Anyway, to answer the question, I think in nickel packages you will see Washington slide over and Watson/Anderson man the corners. Whether it is Banks or Bonner at FS, I do not know.

I say keep Bonner at nickel and rotate Banks, move Washington to FS and let Watson and Anderson handle the corners (unless Banks is better there, too). It ain't pretty, but it might be the best we can do.

And he mixes in a tackle to minimize the YAC from Houston. It was pretty bad last weekend.

all our corners were giving cushion b/c they were so often on an island (while we expected run). If we press in that situation, we likely get beat deep.

Z. Smith can't cover......agreed.

But our corners are terrible. DA can't cover and isn't physical. Two bad combos.

You could put Ronnie Lott and some other all world FS back there and our secondary would still get toasted. A crappy corner will make any safety look bad.

you don't have to play press coverage smoot-style, but if you're lined up 10 yards off the ball, you are GIVING them yardage. if you simply line up 5 yards off the ball, then the quick hitch doesn't look as open. you can still take your first step or two back to avoid getting beat deep, but you at least look like you're taking away the quick hitch. i hate it when corners are so far off the ball, especially last week, when they ran those quick passes consistently and effectively.

If we had played man coverage and brought the heat, it would have forced Nesbitt to make tougher throws. Against the zone, he just had to throw it close to a receiver that was standing still. In man, he would have had to hit the guy in motion. Now if he had proven himself good enough to do that, then you tip your cap to him. But playing zone against him made it easy for him, and really just played right into Tech's hands in the run game, too.

Man would not have allowed the corners to help on the run as much. Give and take....

Yes, Thames has been practicing at WR and he will redshirt. He may move to S in the spring.

Banks is 6'2, 170 so I assume no blitzing from him. I hope he can make a tackle.
