A guy from the MSU tennis team was the guest speaker at the physical fitness awards today. What was cool was the fact that he was all decked out in MSU gear along with a lady from MSU. He must have said Mississippi State a hundred times and asked the kids to raise their hands if they were MSU fans. I would say that at least 80% of the kids raised their hands.
Promoting to kids this young is a great idea. We should do more of it.

No, this guy was as Caucasion American as they come. He was also a fantastic speaker. They said he is one of the top 100 players in the USA.
She was an MSU player or his girlfriend or something. I wasn't really paying attention at the beginning.

Ole Miss tennis players are on their way back from a hard luck loss in the Elite Eight and our tennis players are speaking to elementary schools on their awards day.

A couple of things...

First, he's incredibly smart.. 4.0 all the way through in accounting. Has about 140 hours in four years, already has a job, and will sit for his CPA exam this summer.

Second, incredibly competitive and disciplined. He played our # 1 position this year when in fact if he had been on a better team, he would ahve been 3 or 4 and would have dominated.

Another thing, he's an overachiever and got more out of his ability than anybody.

Engaged to an former LSU/current MSU cheerleader.

Finally, some of you drones will be working for him someday in the not too distant future until he fires your *sses for being sorry.

When I was in junior high school at Rosa Scott, (Madison's Middle School at the time) we had a motivational speaker come before Super Bowl XXIV. It was none other than Madison's own Sammy Winder.

I don't remember anything he said. Probably something along the lines of stay in school, don't use drugs, and work hard and you can achieve your dreams. I did all of those things, and I am still awaiting on my Supermodel girlfriend to come to my door. I'm starting to think that I would have been better off using drugs at the very least.

All I remember was a bunch of 8th grade boys mobbing Winder trying to get his autograph.

And while Winder was out partying with my posse in 8th grade in the burbs, Joe Mantana and Jerry Rice were in NOLA getting ready to wax the Broncos 55-10.

Winder had 1 carry for -5 yards and 1 reception for 7.

Montana had 5 TD passes.

The only other motivational speakers I remember were the Power Team. This was when was in I was in High School at Madison Central, and it was very rare to call the entire school to the gym because it was always so packed. But I go in there and these body building dudes were all going around with rock music playing in the background yelling stuff about Jesus and tearing phone books in half, and breaking baseball bats over their legs, and I found it to be rather shocking. It was like Benny Henn meets Vince McMahon.

Somebody brought Sammy Winder. I don't remember anything he said, and didn't really know he was famous at the time, but it still counts.

I interviewed Mike Justice. I got two questions in before he took over and went into his "Do the riiiight thaaang. This is about liiiiiife," speech. I do remember him saying that if he wasn't a coach he would be an accountant. Looking back, the thought of Mike Justice providing tax advice and preparing taxes makes me laugh.

As you said, dudes were yelling at us about Jesus all while rolling frying pans and tearing phone books...with their bare hands. Seeing how some of the class of 2002 turned out, I don't think the gospel stuck.

in Madison than Sammy Winder. That would have made you cooler in my book.

I can imagine a classroom with Madison celebrities in it- Winder, Justice, Mayor Mary, Robert Pickenpaugh- the town potter/resident hippie, Mike Kent, Mr. Hamil (can't remember his first name, I'm going to kick myself later), and Terry Sledge, who owned Sledge's gas station.

Sounds like a Southpark episode.

Oh, and Mr. Dow is Madison's Big Gay Al.

with the now infamous Prom/charter bus full of alcohol on school property where a bunch of well to do people were about to get suspended/expelled/not allowed to walk on graduation and then it was swept under the rug?

I was impressed with your presentation. Very engaging and informative. I was really impressed with how many times you pimped MSU.
Keep it up!!

Why was that directed to me?

First of all - what did he make on the English portion of his ACT? That is the only indicator of how smart one is.
Second - he played our No. 1 position because we had no one else. 1-11 in the SEC. We sucked hard.
Finally, I will not be working for him in the not too distant future.</p>

drove my bus route from first through about third grade. my mom let him have it one day because he wanted to pick us up on the way into the neighborhood, not the way out (when in fact, you're supposed to pick the kids up on their own side of the street). my mom was livid, and i was so proud of her that day... dow's successor was a woman that may have coached something (though definitely not hawthorne). i flipped that woman off one day in about fourth grade and then hid in the house when she turned the bus around...

and i was a "stage hand" for that show, with other guys from the youth. those guys tore our choir loft up with all their equipment. the best part was that when they left, they left behind some props that we found one night, so some of us started busting bricks and boards. maybe not the smartest move, but it sure was fun.
