My nephew (Auburn fan) spent most of the fourth quarter uttering out loud.. "Y'all are about to beat us 5-3! We are going to lose 5-3!" Unfortunately it was not to be.

Hand to god, right before the play, I turned to my buddy sitting next to me . .

and told him, "Watch. We're about to get a safety, and we're going to lose this game three to two." He said, "Naw, man." After the safety the look on his face was priceless. I just knew. Years of being a State fan.

Near the end, I was hoping for a 4-3 win

Auburn had the ball at their own 17 with about 2 minutes left. Couple of holding calls, who knows.

I thought we actually had a chance to win 4-3 if Croom had punted the ball from midfield instead of going for it on 4th and 15 late in the game. Our punter had already pinned Auburn inside the 5 yard line twice in the game and I thought our best chance of winning was for him to do it again and then us stuff Auburn in the end zone, hope for a holding penalty or force a turnover. But the walrus goes for it in a hopeless situation, and what do you know? Auburn fumbles it back to us 2 plays later. Of course, instead of us getting the fumble at the 10 yard line, it's at midfield and then we throw the game-ending interception a couple plays later.

This was my exact thought at the time as well. We were in a position to pin them deep late in the game with a defense that had scored our only points of the game and an offense that had struggled. I was really hoping we'd punt and manage another safety. Oddly, I still think that was a more likely scenario than getting first down on 4th and 15.
