Current coach at Richmond

Pros:
 • He's young (38)
 • Played for Pete Carril at Princeton so offensive sets shouldn't be a problem
 • Has basically shown year over year improvement almost every year

Cons:

 • he's only made the NCAA once
 • He's young and might need more seasoning
 • Unknown how good a recruiter he is

Discuss.

I've got a list of about 15 guys I'll bring up from time to time during the season. If we get to a ponit we're 12-3 in the SEC we'll just drop it b/c Stans isn't going anywhere at that point.

Then forget about it. 90% of the players we get are already lacking in fundamentals to begin with. They are great athletes but their basketball acumen leaves something to be desired.

Never finished higher than 3rd in his conference. He may be a good coach, but just looking at his record he'd be a pretty big gamble. A bigger gamble than many other coaches who have failed in the SEC.

I'm on board with Stans "retiring" at the end of this season. But we need to make a better hire than this guy whenever Stans does leave. And as I pointed out in my first post, I'm just basing this on his record. He may be a good coach. But just looking at his record, it doesn't look any better than the records people have blasted Stansfor for years now.

is going to have a better record than The Recruiter on numbers...but as has been mentioned on her once or twice- it's who we are beating and who we arent...

Thats the way this works though, younger coaches get their chance to move up. The Recruiter didnt have as good of a record as Williams when he got the job did he?

That's not a good comparison. Need to compare to someone fired based on performance. Gottfried maybe?

Hell, Crooms had more wins than Mullen when we hired him. You arent going to hire someone that has won more and they are going to be from a smaller program, especially in basketball because of the large coaching pool to choose from. I mean damn:

Dook had to hire their head coach away from Army
Villanova hired their coach away from Hofstra
Tennessee hired their coach from Wisconsin-Green Bay
Pitt bumped up an assistant that had no head coaching experience
UConn hired their coach from Northeastern
Missouri hired their coach from UAB
Purdue hired their coach from S. Illinois

and on and on and on

I'm fine with taking a coach from a smaller school. We're probably not going to be able to get a coach from a top-20 program and we sure a hell don't need to promote from within, so we're pretty much going to have to take a coach from a smaller school or a top assistant at a major program. But most of the ones you guys are pushing look mediocre at best. Someone mentioned Gregg Marshall a few weeks ago. That's a hire I'd be pretty happy with. A Chris Mooney hire? Not so much.

He has shown sustained success and the ability to beat bigger programs.
