I keep hearing that Routt is gone. It will be interesting to see what happens if he doesn't get drafted. I think there is a small possibility that Graveman could go pro.
So, Reed, Brownlee, Stratton, Routt, and Casey- that's five right there. Jacob Shempert still has some work to do academically. We won't know anything on him until school starts. I've heard some rumors about CC Watson leaving.
So, that means as of now we're five over. We will probably have a few more walk-ons show up as well.
Again remember- you can have more than 35 on the "team"- but you can only have 35 on the official roster. If that makes sense. I believe that 27 have to be on some form of baseball scholarship and then the other 8 are walk-ons.
I expect our staff to do what they have done in the past- which is basically let everyone that wants to come out try out in the fall and spring and they won't make the final decisions until the last minute. That doesn't mean that the guys that don't make the roster have to transfer- it just means that they can't play or practice. But they can stay at MSU if they choose and they can try out next year if they wish. In the past that has happened to Jordan Faulkner, Tanner Gaines, and Preston Brown.
Each player will meet with the coaches and they will recommend that the players do what is best for them- whether that is stay, go to a JUCO or whatever- but ultimately the player will make the decision and the coaches will normally go along with it. I would say a majority of the players that leave because of roster issues leave on their own and usually they are walk-ons.
The players you mentioned are actually not as likely to be cut because they have been in the program for at least a year and many of them have experience- which is something that they are going to have over the walk-ons.
Busby is actually a decent prospect. He's learning how to pitch. He was a catcher throughout high school. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he is drafted.
Girodo will be a senior. Maybe he steps up and has a decent season. Not holding my breath and it's not a big deal if he doesn't step up.
CC is hurt- I could see him leaving.
Gaines actually has been decent and he is just a freshman. I think he's a keeper. He might turn out to be a decent long relief guy.
Ammirati I could see leaving over playing time. We also have Daniel Garner, Cort Brinson and and Zack Randolph coming in. Haven't heard any rumors about him leaving though.
Brayden Jones- I'd like to see him stay. I think he can be a good role player for us. He reminds me a lot of Joseph McKaskill and I mean that in a good way. I think he can be a good pinch hitter for us. He is a guy that was going to need to redshirt and develop over a couple of years anyway.
