The Houston kid from Poplarville that I asked you about awhile back just committed. He is apparently blowing up with several invitations to different showcases. I wasn't expecting this much from the kid.

He's basically Hawtin Buchannan with an off speed pitch. Sounds like a good pick up. Offers from State, UM and USM.

He is a great kid, with a great family. I saw him pitch several times last year. I know he went 30 something innings in a row last year without giving up a run. Poplarville rode him all last year. He can smash too. I think he batted around .450 and had 7 or so bombs which was about 4th or 5th in the state. I'm glad we got him. I texted him tonight to congratulate him and he said he was excited to a dawg and our staff was by far the best of any that recruited him.

Because you are the one who told me about him.

This is s very big pick-up for us. PG has him rated as the second best player in the state- MSU commit Reid Humphries is rated number one.

He pitched at a PG event recently and they had him at 91. They also had him listed at 6'6"

Mississippi has players like this and Brandon Woodruff that are from small communities and sometimes they have to be found.

We've had a really good recruiting class as far as pitchers go- our rotation of the future could be Austin Sexton, Vance Tatum, and Zac Houston in some order. And then we've got Dakota Hudson, Avery Geyer, and maybe Derek Martin- all who have been clocked in the 90's other than Hudson. I also like that we are getting a lot of pitchers that are in the 6'2"-6'6" range.

We're also cleaning up in state as well- Humphries, Houston, Tatum, and Martin- that's a very good haul right there.

Is it looking like it could be a top class in the country, or mediocre? It's hard to keep up with baseball crootin....where do you guys find this stuff?

who told me about him. I figured the combination of proud parent and poplarville wouldn't equate to the type of prospect that he apparently is. I'm afraid, and I warned his dad about him being riden too hard at a place like poplarville.

Is the best website for baseball recruiting. Bad thing is, it's pretty expensive- and they only rate players that go to their events. So, it's not an end all be all.

We'll know more when we are done recruiting, but I think it's probably at least a top 15 class when it's all said and done- especially when you add Cord Sandberg to it who is the number 23 rated baseball player by PG. Sexton and Humphries are rated pretty high- top 150 I believe for both of them, and now we have Houston who is also in the top 250.

Bear in mind- last year about 70% fo the top 100 for PG last year signed pro contracts. And most of the people that rate classes wait until after the signing deadline and then rate the players that actually get to school.

They don't have Vance Tatum or Brent Rooker ranked- and both of those guys are solid players. Rooker is going to the national power showcase representing Tennessee. I think Derek Martin and Dakota Hudson are good sleeper players- both play at small schools. Both have good size- Martin is 6'3" and Hudson is 6'5". Martin throws in the low 90's and has power. Hudson is in the high 80's and projectable. Avery Geyer from Florida is 5'11", but he throws in the low 90's and has had a really impressive summer at some PG events.

Trent Davidson who we've got committed as a DT is a very good first baseman from Oxford, Alabama- PG has him rated at 331.

One thing I like is we are seeing Cohen recruit bigger players- Geyer is the shortest at 5'11" and many are in the 6'3"-6'5" range. We're still getting the dual position guys, and now we're getting some dual sport guys. I like what I'm seeing.

I think we will probably sign 4-5 more this summer/fall for this class and then as always maybe add one or two in the spring. Maybe raid Canada. I might adopt a couple of Dominicans.

That's good news. Would love to see us get a top 10-15 class. If we can Put together a good season this coming year, we may really see it take off in terms of recruiting. I know some dislike him, but I think Cohen is building something strong.

Going to a SR, winning the SEC Tournament and going to a regional, having Stratton drafted in the first round- all of that is good exposure for our program.

We've got to get to where we are going to Omaha consistently if we want to win a NC though.

He pitched in the minor leagues. He isn't going to overuse Houston. He didn't last year, so that isn't something to worry about. He coached Wade Miley in Louisiana, so he does a good job at developing pitchers.

Would love to see us get a top 10-15 class

We're going for 4 of them in a row(working on a 5th in a row) at/near this standard...
Baseball America:
2009 class - 8th
2010 class - 22nd
2011 class - 14th
2012 class - Comes out around Oct 20th
2013 class will be one of the absolute best in the country if we don't get demolished by the draft

Cohen pulled in those first 3 classes(baseball has an early preseason signing period when most of the talent signs in Nov) coming off of the worst 3 season stretch in modern MSU baseball history, along with a previous coach that hadn't aggressively recruited in the better part of a decade. Amazing really when you look at it in that context.

This '12 and '13 classes will be the first to show the bump up from us becoming competitive again along with our pitching staff's success.

We're picked for Omaha next year. People are getting excited about MSU baseball again. The fans are about to show back up at Dudy Noble, major renovations will begin soon thereafter, and the "atmosphere" will come back with a vengeance...

The worry about small towns, especially ones that don't really produce baseball talent is that once they do get a top flight player, they ride them into the ground.

Zach Houston is a great kid from a great family. Upside potential is good. A great commit for MSU.
