Both of these guys have been very good to this point and both have good stuff.....Buchanan throws harder but Holder has that 12/6 breaking ball that no one has touched this year......What say you?

Because I think Buchanan is a future starting pitcher and I think Holder is a closer/relief pitcher. It's sort of like asking who is better- Sandy Koufax or Mariano Rivera?

If I was a scout, I would have to say that Buchanan is the better prospect simply because starting pitchers have more draft value than relief pitchers. I think both have the potential to be All-SEC guys one day.

He just needs to add/work on his secondary pitches. Just like Stratton when he was a freshman.

If Buchanan started now, I think he would struggle.

It's just like for us- I think Lindgren, Fitts, and Cox as well as Woodruff for that matter- all of them will probably be starting pitchers for us. But right now, other than Woodruff who might start tomorrow, they're coming out of the bullpen getting some exposure to SEC action, but mostly working towards the future. And they'll get to add some innings in the offseason playing summer ball. I think all will be very good by the way.

A pitcher that's a closer can come in and have a more immediate impact than a lot of starting pitchers because they can get by with two pitches and they don't have to try to go through the order 2-3 times a game.

Because most of them pronate to get that snap, unless of course they have huge hands and great wrist. That motion seems to always lead to elbow injuries like Kerry Wood.

The slider is an elbow killer- but it's tough as hell to hit

You can throw a slider from an angle that doesn't put a ton of torque on the elbow just as you can throw a curve that does the same. Randy Johnson put a TON of torque on his arm but he did it at an angle that elbow is meant to bend, hence his longevity. It all depends on the "snap off" at the end if yo pronate or supinate it still is going to push your forearm in another direction from your upper arm which will put strain on the ligaments.

I swear you just make stuff up as you go. There is no guarantee that Holder is a bullpen guy. He's definitely got the tools to be a starter.<div>
</div><div>Is he better than Buchanan? Who knows. They are both pretty damn good. </div>

We should be good pitching wise as you said, and we should be pretty good defensively, and that will win us our share of games. I really think we can have a season like last year as far as wins- somewhere between 34-36 wins, and I think finishing third in the SEC West is likely given the other teams in the SEC. At a minimum, we should go to a regional, and I would like to see us host a regional. If we get hot at the right time and get a good draw in the postseason, I could definitely see us going to Omaha. Especially if we have some hitters really step up. All in all, I think we will be a pretty good team. I think the key for us as far as winning a National Championship one day is to host Super Regionals and go to Omaha consistently.

At the beginning of the season, I predicted that we would win 34 games during the regular season. We have 29 right now with two against Valley and one against Central Arkansas left on the schedule. That would put us at 32 with seven SEC games left. I'm actually probably going to be pretty close to that. It's on the For Whom the Cowbell Tolls blog.

I also predicted 17 SEC wins- we have 12 now, but we blew two games we shouldn't have and have had a ton of injuries. If we don't make it, that's my excuse. At any rate, we'll see how close I am on that one.

Not too bad so far. And that was without knowing about how hurt our team would be- if anything, I probably underestimated us a little bit.

Your numbers are looking good and that is what I was trying to say. Good call Todd, I'll just forget about the offensive stuff.

who also played the outfield. This is the first time he has ever been a relief pitcher exclusively.

Having seen both play, I stand by my comments.

Could Holder ever start at MSU? Maybe as a senior, but not with the guys I mentioned on the team in front of him and again, he would have to develop a third pitch. I really think his home is in the bullpen- and heck, I'm not so sure that John Marc Shelly won't be our closer of the future anyway. I think whoever our closer is, Holder and Shelly are going to be a pretty good combo.

He was a starter in the minor leagues so he probably said the same in the majors bout look how that worked out.

and cody catterwhite was the next nolan ryan. i hung out with the guy (and i use hung out very loosely) while he was at om, didn't care about his potential just like many extremely talented players. i know this is a random 'call out' but that dude had all the potential in the world and didn't give one ****. i know that was a few years ago but i use to be very connected within the om baseball program. assistant coaches sending girlfriends and wifes to bars to spy and players and ****. i'm sure it happens everywhere though...

We've also won a couple of games we had no right winning (Sunday's OM game, yesterday's game, etc.), so it all evens out.
