I think he kind of wants out.

And he is awfully close to 35 to be getting that long of a deal for that amount of money.

Dude is 31, and the Cardinals would be crazy to give him that. Offer him 7 years at 200 million. If he turns it down then see ya.

The one thing Pujols has working against him is the Yankees and Six both have high priced first basemen locked up for awhile so they won't be there to drive his price up

No way we'll be willing to pay him over 20$ million per year when he's 39, 40, and 41.

I've pretty much lost hope that we'll resign him. If he'd take a 8 year, 240$ million deal, I think we'd do it, as long as we could defer some of that to a later date.

The Matt Holliday signing is looking more and more like Pujols insurance than anything, now.

7 years, $200M sounds about right. or maybe give him the 10 years if he wants it, but make the last 3 years a yearly club options or something? hell if i know, but they get creative with contracts all the time.

in the post-roid baseball, guaranteeing a hitter much past 35 is just playing with fire.

i mean, and really, i don't think there is a thing in the world i couldn't do with $200M that i could do with $300M, especially coupled with the over $100M he's already made from playing baseball + probably another $100M or so in endorsements and what not.

At most. He already has chronic elbow and hamstring issues that probably aren't going to get better with age.

10 years is just too much....I wondering in 6 years what all these teams that are paying guys $20M that are unproductive are going to do.

Baseball needs a salary cap in the worst way

Seeing if they will bite on the big offer which the team would be stupid to do. The deal will be made late tomorrow or he won't be back next year. I think he will wait to the last minute and take a 7 year deal.

....basically said that the deadline was artificial, and that having his agent negotiate throughout the season would be no bigger distraction than having everybody speculate all season.

I hope you're right. I hope that deal gets done tomorrow, but I also think that what he wants is fairly outlandish and the Cards need to let him go if he won't budge.

The only thing I disagree with is that he wants to leave. I really think he wants to stay in St. Louis, and the reason I think that is because he is having serious talks with the Cardinals this far in advance. If he wanted to leave, I would think he would just wait and see what happens in the offseason.

I know he owns a restaurant in St. Louis- but which player doesn't? His family moved to Kansas City from the Dominican, and Albert is a huge part of not just the team, but the entire communuty.

It seems like- from what I have heard- the hang up is the length of the contract. I agree that 10 years is too long.

I think one of two things will happen:

1. Albert will come to deal- perhaps not likely, but the reports that are now coming out are from things that happened two weeks ago. Who knows what has been going on in the meantime?

2. Albert will test the free agent market. I think what the Cardinals are hoping to find- and they're playing with fire here- is that he won't be able to get the deal he wants anywhere, and will come to terms with a deal with the Cardinals. Again, that is probably what they are hoping will happen. What could happen is someone could offer him what he wants and get him.

Either way, the Cardinals are going to have to pay- and that's either by paying Albert, or in the form of fan backlash. I think they are going to have to end up looking at their budget and expand it, and they'll probably end up jacking up the ticket prices more. I will be happy to pay it, though.

There are just so many side issues here because they have to think about how they are going to handle their other players like Wainwright and Holliday and if they are going to be able to pay them down the line, or will a huge Pujols contract cause them to let those players go and be in a position where they can't get anyone else?

Or really that the deadline was kind of in question as to when it would take place.

I would suspect that you are right about Pujol's agent working during the season on the deal, too.
