From an eye witness account from the first three games.

Well, first of all let me say that overall, I was pretty satisfied with how the baseball team looked. There were some surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant. I'm taking this with a grain of salt because these games are almost like spring training except the games count.

Pitching- overall much improved. I thought Bowen looked erratic at times with his command. Moore and Crosswhite looked much improved. Routt has a very funky delivery, and seemed to get better as the game progressed. Devin Jones has a really good fastball, but needs some more work. Bussey looked OK. Houston didn't impress me all that much, and Swindle and Caleb Reed both struggled. The thing that I was really pleased with was the fact that the staff seemed to lack a lot more confidence. Butch Thompson has done a great job so far with a staff that is not all that talented and has a bunch of guys that are coming off bad seasons for the most part.

Offense- We take much better at bats. We may not get a hit, but we are much more aggressive, and I think I saw only one or two guys strike out looking. One was on a really nasty curveball. Jet Butler and Russ Sneed have made marked improvement. Collins looks very good as well.

Defense- MUCH improved. We look like a really good defensive team, and made a lot of really tough plays. We screwed up some in the second game, and it really hurt us, but two errors in three games is acceptable.

Baserunning- Aggressive. Probably overly aggressive in my opinion. We got thrown out at third THREE times by the same guy from UNI. Collins getting into a run down when he was at third, and there was one out after a ball was hit to the third baseman wasn't aggressive- it was stupid. That being said, there were times where you could tell that we were really getting the other team rattled by some of the things that we were doing. More often than not, our aggressiveness paid off for us.

Coaching- B+ It's a good start, but I thought Cohen left Reed in the game too long and getting thrown out at third three times by the same guy is not a good thing. Overall though, We look very good and I think this team is having fun playing Cohen ball. Even in the game we lost, we gave ourselves a chance to win and did everything we could do to win.

Uniforms- I like them. Bringing back the 85 MSU uniform script was cool, and I even like the white hats. I like the traditional uniforms that are sleeveless with the maroon hats better, personally, but I have no problem with either outfit. We at least look like a baseball team now.

Fans- F. We've been waiting for a real baseball coach for seven years, and then we finally get one and no one shows up. And I know that people had to work, and I think it was a mistake by the AD to move the game up, but we have people that will show up for a SR at 10 AM on a work day. While I am by no means calling for 13,000, there is no reason that we shouldn't have had at least 4,000-5,000 people there.

Thought the same about the base-running. Overly aggressive. I remember a runner being thrown out at home in tonight's game against NIU. Can't remember who it was, but the guy never had a prayer of reaching home before the throw.

Tonight's attendence was very low, and I am willing to blame the weather.

Todd,
since i was driving back from basketball still I had to listen to the game on the radio and wanted to ask about two things.
One, Goforths un-sucessful bunt. Was he close at all on any of them? and did Mark keep the bunt on himself with 2 strikes?

Two, Butler K's looking to end the game.. was it the curveball you mentioned? A K looking with the game on the line is horrible, have to be hacking..foul it off if its close at all.

I think running to third was a calculated move by Cohen-be aggressive, take chances, don't be afraid. The most infuriating thing about Polk's teams his second time around was how scared they were to take chances. Polk's teams would take first pitch strikes on BP pitches grooved down the middle, the baserunners would get chewed out if they took third on a single, they'd passively look at strike three with runners in scoring position, etc. I think Cohen is trying to add an aggressive spirit to the team, plus give our SEC opponents something to think about when we get to Conference play.

As for pitching, we have some real gas cans in the Bullpen.

1. Weather has been terrible for baseball. Cold both days and a threat of rain on Saturday.
2. Basketball game in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
3. Maybe the biggest reason, fans have gotten out of the habit of going to baseball games. The Polk II era has drained most fans emotionally, and they're just not going to get too excited about baseball until they see some results.

it was cold and windy. Froze my a$$ off. But if I lived in the Starkville area, I would have gone. Even if it had been just for a few innings. I plan to go soon for a mid week game. Retirement gives me a little more flexibility. :)

..your report sounds overly optimistic considering this board is constantly reminding us to not get excited about this season, because, "these are still Polk's players."

Funny how Mullen will be saddled with Croom's players this fall, but everybody here expects Mullen's offense to click on all cylinders with Croom's players.

But Cohen is going to be a flop this season, because he's working with Polk's players.

Cohen is going to flop this year. People I've seen posting and people I've talked to expect us to make a run at qualifying for the SEC Tourney and a regional.

With Mullen, he got in here in time to pull a top 20 recruiting class with people that can make an impact. Cohen was hired after the recruiting class was already signed and in place for the most part. It's harder for him to make a difference his first year.

(Boyd ranked these teams #123 and #127 last year, for reference he ranked our 23-33 team #122). And even in the 2 wins, we managed to go 14 consecutive innings only scoring 1 run. So you may want to hold off just a bit before you put down any non-refundable hotel deposits in Hoover for Memorial Day weekend or Starkville the next weekend. I've said from the beginning that Cohen will do an outstanding job at MSU. I really think we're about to enter the Golden Era of MSU baseball. But this is going to be a tough year. If we can sneak into a regional with a #3 seed, that would be a pretty good year for us. If Routt (a true freshman who was not one of Polk's players last year) turns out to be as good as he looked yesterday, I think we've got a decent chance at 8th or 9th in the SEC and a regional bid.

It was the first game on Saturday, and somewhere around the 4th inning I think. We just got a guy picked off at first and Cohen runs out there. He gets into the umps face on first base, kicked some dirt around, made quite a scene. He then got into the home plate umps face and it was funny as hell. Before this our team was struggling to get anything going. We then started hitting the ball and won the game. He knows how to get the crowd into the game and keep his team fired up about playing. I believe that scene was a huge part in the victory on Saturday.

Anybody else see that?

it off if its close at all.

Goforth made contact with three pitches and fouled each of them off. It was poor execution on his part, he was "poking" at the ball. Goforth not getting the bunt down really killed the momentum because we had a lead off single, and I feel like if he had gotten it down, we score.

Butler's K was not on the curveball that I was thinking about. That was a mistake on his part.

I live in Madison and can't go to all the games, and it took some finagling on my part to get off of work to make the games I went to.

BUT what I can do is shell out 100 bucks for Maroon to the Max. That would be a small sacrifice for a good cause. The bad thing about that is you miss certain things like Cohen chewing out Goforth after he screwed up.

I hate that, because I love baseball and would love to be there. I made darn sure that I NEVER had a night class on Tues or Weds when I was in school at State.
