Unfortunately there is a Rooney rule as a lifelong Steeler fan I don't think that Harbaugh has the "qualifications" to be the next Steelers head coach. Just being honest.

Brian Flores I could see being a candidate there or Robert Saleh. I think they stick to their defensive roots.

Be interesting to see if Tomlin takes another gig or takes a year off. He might need to recharge the batteries but if I'm Vegas or Miami, he's the first call I'm making as they are getting Harbaugh or Stefanski with their QB situations. Tomlin is at least used to it by now.

Can you provide more detail?

What required qualifications does Harbaugh not have?

He's under contract until 2027. A team would have to give up compensation to get him from the Steelers. I think this was "I'm tired of this ****" more than a firing.

The Raiders have had five head coaches in the last five seasons. The Steelers have had three coaches in 56 seasons. Chuck Noll 1969-1991, Bill Cowher 1992-2006, Mike Tomlin 2007-2025. Just goes to show the stability of that organization and why they are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history.

As a lifelong Steelers fan, I am both sad and hopeful.

It is really cool that the organization values stability. It is really frustrating that the team hasnt made it past the Wild Card game since 2017.

And what's funny is, going into the Chuck Noll hire, they were one of the worst franchises in NFL history.

Looked it up because I'm bored at work, and the Steelers had 13 coaches before Chuck Noll, from their inception in 1933 to 1968. Those coaches combined to post a 161-254-19 record. Since Noll was hired in 1969, the Steelers have a record of 535-352-4.

Brian Flores would be my first pick especially if he can find a good offensive coordinator. Harbaugh is a good coach but he's 63 and the Rooney's want someone long term. Noll, Cowher and Tomlin were all under 35 years old when they were hired. Include the fact that there are reports that Harbaugh is looking for close to $20 million/year to coach. No thanks. Marcus Freeman's name has been mentioned. Not sure how I feel about that.

Fun fact - Tomlin only coached one game in his 19-year career where the Steelers were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. I believe it was the last game of the 2013 season.

Whomever it is has a chore on their hands. The defense is old and getting older and unless they sign a veteran QB in the offseason, they are looking at Mason Rudolph or Will Howard starting and they need a legit #2 WR.

I liked Tomlin. Good coach and had a good ride in the Steel town. Probably a good move to change it up. Sometimes even if you have a decent coach that is always winning, but gets to the point he can't get them over the hump in the playoffs, it's time to try something else. I bet he ends up as a NFL HC somewhere else in the near future. (if he wants to).
