Tonight changed my mind on expanded instant replay for baseball.....

I'd been against it due to length of games, but this **** is ridiculous. Just get the calls right. It's not that hard and shouldn't take that long.

Also, the Wild Card should be 3 games. Period.

17 the MLB.

I don't think that would help with this call

This call was a judgement call by the umpire. what, 5 other umpires saw this play and could have talked to the lf umpire to make sure the call was correct but since it's his judgement call and not a definitive rule, they chose not too. It wasn't like arguing a fair or foul ball. I always thought the infield umpires make that call anyways so I was confused when the LF umpire made the call.

I agree, and it's bad for MLB. Only one solution for all parties: Fire the ump

The ump crew huddled up to discuss the call, and i don't think any reasonable person would think any of them thought the call had been made correctly. but they thought it was more important to cover for one ump, than to get the call right. Fire the ump, and that will never happen again.

Hell, they'd be justified to fire the whole crew. Every one of them failed as bad as any ump can fail.

The 3B ump and LF ump both called it at the same time.

And to be on record, I thought it was a bad call. As a former ump, I can't see how they considered that an infield fly.

It was a horrible call. It wasn't an infield fly to begin with, but even if it was the call wasn't made until the ball almost hit the ground. The umpire blew that call badly. Twice.

As a former ump you should know the position on the field has no bearing on the rule. It is defined by the infield player's ability to make a legitimate play

The correct call was made. How do you suggest they should have tried to rectify it? It is not like they could guess the outcome and award it.

It's always nice when special people get internet access.

son, they didn't have to do anything to rectify it. it was already bases loaded with one out. the umps ruled IF fly and made it 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs.

What if they decided two runs could have scored or none? What if they ruled a runner would have been thrown out? You clearly do not have a clue. Baseball is not a game that should be decided after the fact based on what ifs.

You left out half of it. It's also INTENDED to protect the runners to prevent an infielder from dropping the ball intentionally to get multiple force outs. The ball dropped in mid left field... The MOST he'd be able to get there is the guy at third. Also, 9 times out of 10, the infielder is waived off a catch like that, so, no... I don't see how you consider that "ordinary effort." it was a blown call. Show me another situation in MLB history where what happened last night was called an infield fly by an outfield umpire... Who wouldn't have been working a game in the regular season, anyway. He's there to watch the line past him, signal home runs, watch catches in the outfield, and help with appeals.
