While I'm open to the possibility that I just don't know what I'm doing, it appears that because of my cable and internet providers, I can't actually get access to espn3.
I also don't have an iphone.
Am I just doomed to watch twitter play by play while my VCR flashes 12:00?
Edited to add: It was just my not knowing what I was doing. I was put off by the log-in info I was prompted for and didn't think I had the specific kind of service needed. But it turns out that I do. I should have asked my husband earlier in the process.
It does not go by who your internet is with, rather your cable. I have comcast for internet only and I cannot log in to espn3 because I dont have TV service with them.

You may want to try again. I used to have the same problem, but I gave the ESPN3 website and WatchESPN app another try a few months ago and sure enough, it fired right up. I'm a Comcast internet only customer, and I haven't had a problem watching games since then.
I've been using my buddy's login info for years.. We both probably stream it at the same time so there doesn't seem to be a limit on users. Just find somebody to give you their info. Might be easier said than done though
If you know someone with Uverse of Fios or really anyone other than Metrocast or CableOne they can give you their log-in info and you can use your laptop to watch it. That's what I did.
