Tony George will be missed by so many. He was a football and basketball coach at Mount Airy for many years and a graduate of Mount Airy High. I think he coached or was at Starmount for a while and a Principal at several schools. Tony was an amazing man and he left us so young but he got his wings Friday.
Prayers for his Family

3rd winningest boys' basketball coach in Mt. Airy's history. Coached 11 seasons from 1987-1997 compiling a 165-124 record. Led Bears to 3 conference championships. His best season's record was 1993-94 going 24-4 and bowing in the West Regional final by 3 points to Bladenboro 55-58. The 1994 team scored over 100 points 3 times and won the Northwest 1A/2A tournament by 33 points over Forbush 94-61. His Bears other 20-win season was 1992-93 when they went 23-5 and also losing in the West Regional final by a 4-point margin.

RIP Tony George. Once a Bear always a Bear.

I thought the world of Tony. After he left Mount Airy High, he spent a few years in a different field as a sales manager, I left the newspaper shortly after and worked for Tony for a couple of years and he was just as great a person as I knew as a photographer. I lost track of Tony after he left for Starmount and I had moved on myself to management until I retired and worked part-time. I often thought of Tony but had no way of contacting him. Hearing this Friday hit me like a rock. He was almost 10 years younger than myself. We never know when it is our time for God to call us home. Prayers for his family at this time of loss and sorrow. 🙏🙏🙏
