This kid is being recruited hard by Louisville and UNC, along with MTSU and some others.? His dad tells me he is applying to State's architecture program and will sign with State if offered.

I knew a guy who was just a walk on one year. He failed Studio (5 hours class that is the core class). I have a hard time seeing that happen. However if he did make it he's one dedicated kid. His best bet would be to take his first year Studio in the summer, the delayed entry approach. that way he's not taking Studio his first year. Let him get acclimated into college and football before he tries to juggle the curriculum and practice.
Frankly the delayed entry is what I'd recommend to most students, have fun your freshman year. It will be the last time you will have any decent amount of free time.

Arch and football would be a VERY hard combo. He said his son wants to play at State and then be an architect afterwards. No academic or disciplinary issues. He is attracted to State because of both the arch program and the chance to play SEC ball. I have a feeling his having been exposed to Diaz has also influenced that line of thinking.

If he's serious he should check in with the College of Architecture. His best move would be to go to Summer School before Fall and take some of the time consuming prerequisites. Maybe Physics I & II, try to test out of anything that is possible like Western Civ, Comp 1, or Finite Math. Architecture is not all that difficult if you have the right aptitude (half engineer/half artist) but the curriculum is very time consuming, particularly Studio. The more you reduce your overall credit hours per semester the better. Very few Architecture classes are offered in the Summer so getting your core stuff out is the best. Another thing to note is that the 5th and final year is taught in Jackson, and your class schedule might as well be all day, every day even on the weekends.

Ibarely madeit out of there sane as it is... can't imagine doing it with the time required to play D1 football.

God bless him if he can do it.

Edit toadd a few morecomments. Architecture school isn't thathard it's a lot of stuff everyone did in kindergarten- gluing stuff together and drawing pretty pictures. But the sheer amount of work they require in the limited time frame is what's hard. It's as much the process as the results and you cannot cram for your final review. Time managment is key, and I just don't see there being enough hours in the week to accomplish both.

Corrected that for you.

Ok it's not exactly like Engineering, or really even Art. But it's not like Interior Design. I never picked out a set of drapes in school, ever. ID is where Arch students (mainly gals) go when they Double D in Studio. And yes that was a Freudian Slip.
