i mean....we only gave up 563 yards (most of which were in the first half), refused to break the ineffective zone and drop 8 in 3rd and 19....only to surrender 21. lets keep doing that when the game is on the line. oh yeah, we gave up over 50% on 3rd down conversions again (at least half of which were on 3rd and long)....and sadly, we had success bringing the extra man (looked like a freaking jailbreak the few times we decided to blitz) yet put that in our back pocket when the situation demanded we do something other than drop into zone.

important stats:
342 yards surrendered in the first half, 563 for the game
28 points surrendered in the first half, 59 for the game
mett only missed on 4 passes (25-29)
6 of 11 3rd down conversions

and why exactly are these numbers different than what we saw last year? looks like chris wilson to me....tell me how im wrong.....chris wilson had a top 50 defense too. how did that work out for him?

am i the only still not drinking the cool-aid? anyone....anyone......are the majority of you still confident in his ability?

people, hes not the savior we all hoped he would be....i know there are a few of your out there...maybe lurkers...maybe you dont post that much....speak up....i know im not the only one concerned. with our d line, we should be making the backfield a freaking slaughterhouse...tonight proved that....yet the dogs are called off in favor of some soft-*** zone that doesnt work.

Talent is the problem. Can't out scheme players that are that much better. Our db talent is lacking, maybe one pro in the bunch.

no doubt, there was a talent advantage....there always is when we play lsu. somewhere i think we had a clear advantage was in the trenches....it makes it easy on them when their 6 - 8 (lt,lg,c,rg,rt,te,rb,fb) vs our 3 or 4 (de, dt, dt, de). when we bring extra guys, it starts to tip more in our favor especially because we blitz so rarely. we were really catching them off guard when we did blitz but inexplicably stopped.

im just really discouraged that we keep doing the same thing and inevitably, it keeps failing. at some point, you just have to say 17 it, im trying something new. we have chris wilson 2.0. thats the truth regardless of how many people want to face that reality.

We play a lot more press man than with Wilson, especially on the boundary side. The rest is decidedly Wilsonesque. I think along with the offense, Mullen also dictates the defensive philosophy hence the similar to almost every years defense.

i sincerely doubt the 85 bears would be in a 3 man rush on 3rd and 19 against a qb that had been shredding our "zone" all night...unless buddy ryan wanted to put on a showcase of what NOT to do.

no other fanbase in america would be making excuses for giving up 59 points. we deserve collins.

You need to drop it on the third and long. In that situation, You play either (1) zone, or (2) man with 2 or 3 deep safeties. One on one plays are the things most likely to beat you. especially with our corners.

The zone was the right call. Cox was apparently just too stupid to realize that him sitting at a 15 yard drop does us absolutely no good.

Pain either event, it didn't matter. We played man, zone, had safety help, and even double teamed, and NO DEFENSES WE HAD could stop 3 and 80.

zone was NOT the right call when you have no idea how to run it...and if anything is apparent at this point, its that we dont know what we are doing. im watching the play now on dvr.

situation....3rd and 19 ball on the lsu 30. 9:44 on the play clock.

the previous play (2nd and 6) we brought 5 and it was a total jailbreak on a play-action. loss of 8 yards. mett had zero time to hit the 10-15 yard out rout he was trying to get.

followed by a false start.

we have 3 down 19 to go, a corner shows outside blitz, two backers show inside blitz, but all back out prior to the snap. ball is snapped and two of our dl are double teamed but fight through...autry is the only one with a clear release, but he is on the backside....rb picks him up. mett does a roll out to buy time (not a designed roll out because the entire right side of the lsu line allows a right side outside release). mett is releasing right roughly 6 yards deeper from where the shotgun snap was taken....a full 3 second count before the ball comes out.

we are in a nickel package where cox is responsible for the flats short of the first down, and deyonte evans is responsible for the deep flats past the marker. cox is 7 yards off the wr when the ball is snapped and was back-peddling.

first mistake was rushing only 3....especially considering we were getting pressure when we sent extra men with 4 down.
second mistake was not challenging the wr at the l.o.s. and trying to slow the development of the rout and disrupting the timing of a 3rd and 19....we just let the wr streak right to his spot, catch and move the chains....that simple.
third mistake was going straight zone. the wr (dural) recognized it and sat right in the soft spot of the zone...which just so happened to be right at the first down marker. we could not have taken it any easier on them. unimpeded, unchallenged wr sits 2 yards past the marker, runs directly to his spot, sits and catches a the pass. its pitch and catch.

should have been 4 down, should have blitzed at least 1....preferably 2 considering the success of the blitz the play before, should have been bump and run or press to slow the development of a 3rd and 19 pass everyone in the stadium knew was coming, should have given safety support.

they convert and the next play, we go into man.....wrs are covered and mett dumps it off to hill.

it was a freaking 3 wr set for crying out loud. not a single lsu eligible receiver released outside of those 3.

4 corners, a fs, a ss, and 2 backers couldnt cover their 3 wr. thats just awful football.

landry (80) was injured half way through the 3rd quarter....he wasnt even in on this play. it doesnt matter who is out there, our **** defense cannot sit on their heels and react in that situation. they are soft and contest nothing. im not suggesting putting our corners on islands, they have safety help but we were allowing to do whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it. we were lost in our own zone.

most of the damage was done with an injured landry on the field. he had a gimpy ankle in the 3rd, hobbled through his cuts and still made our secondary look like they were playing in sand. those that attended didnt have the benefit of that information, but landry was not nearly 100% for that second half and was hobbled with an ankle.

8 guys covering 3 on 3rd and 19 and we surrender (as have we all season) a big 3rd down. our **** version of whatever our players think is zone does not work and it hasnt worked all year. the few times we brought pressure last night, we were immensely successful. being conservative isnt working out for us. whats the worst thing that can happen? we surrender 59 in an attempt to generate pressure? watch the replay....its not pretty.
