Hate to tell you boys but Dawgybreeze is correct on this. My husband played on the 1980 MSU team and he had said the same thing and had Emory let Coaches Mullen and Wilson call plays all year, they would have gone undefeated. Coach Bellard was a nice man but he would not open up the offense and take advantage of the defenses stacking 8 and 9 men in the box. USM dared Emory to do it and he wouldn't. The sad part was as what Dawgy said, he took over the offense after we ran the table against Miami,LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and Ole Miss in the Sun Bowl. The players were livid when he took over again and it was back to the same ole same ole. barry and Moon had enough sense to take what the defenses were giving them and Emory always said if we excecute, it doesn't matter what we do. Ashamed the guy couldn't adjust, but he never would. We should have won the SEC that year because our defense was as good as there was in the country.

*Which brings up the subject of Sherrill's downfall, and the o-line. Other than the 2 juco All Americans in 2000, how many years of awful o-line recruiting did we have to put together to end up where we did? WTF was that all about?
Not saying it was the only reason, but part of it was Eli Manning at ole miss and all the decent OL prospects in the state wanted to block for Eli.

Jackie proved we could win CONSISTENTLY, that is what outsiders have always failed to get. If you look back at our history, nearly every coach we've had in the past 50 or so years has had a winning season, they just didn't do it enough. People compare us to Vandy who has had two winning seasons in 35 years and that is a total crap comparison.

1. Babe McCarthy - had it not been for the old south laws, we would likely have won a national championship with him. MSU really screwed up by letting him go.

2. Jackie Sherrill - Brought an "attitude" that we had not previously had, and at one point was oh so close to winning even more than he did.

3. Ron Polk I - Very loyal to State and before he lost focus was the best at what he did.

4. Bob Tyler - Bigest mistake was in being made AD. Had that not happened and the NCAA/Larry Gillard thing, no telling what the ultimate result would have been.

5.Tom D'Armi - yes, I know "only" an assistant baseball coach, but was tremendous in working with Coach Gregory and one of hardest workers I have ever seen. Would love to have seen him be head BB coach at one point.

Hon Mention - Ron Greene (Great coach, but only stayed one year due to AD Bob Tyler not being fair toward BB program); Dan Mullen (May soon be #1 on my overall list, but could not justify after just one year); Sharon Fanning (Very good coach, but has had little to work with until recently, due in large part to non-support by prev AD);Emory Bellard (1980 Bamma game would get him on this list alone...and I don't care who called the plays!)Paul Gregory (fine gentleman and obvious winner)

That's about it...obviously I left off a few good, successful coaches, but the question was about "favorites."

"big time" sec ath dept i can tell you for a fact that there was no loyalty. just being unhireable by anybody else. and no i won't offer "proof" so don't believe it if you don't want to but my source is not second or third hand rumor. finally, i'm also not under the delusion that ole miss is the hallowed ground of untouchable coaches either so its not just about doggingmsu.

Ron Polk: Yep, he should not have returned, but he put MSU baseball on the national map and basically caused the other SEC schools to improve their facilities and make collegebaseball a higher priority.

Jackie Sherrill: He proved what I never hadbelieved....a coach canwin at MSU.

Rick Stansbury:My frustration with Stans is growing but he has accomplished a lot at MSU.

I do not have two others....don't remember Babe, didn't likeBellard's three yards and a cloud of dust act, and one Final Four doesn't putWilliams in my top 3.

Coaches aren't loyal to schools because they can't afford to be loyal. Disloyalty goes both ways. Tommy Tuberville ditches you after promising to leave "in a pine box", yet you shitcan David Cutcliffe after one losing season and only a year removed from nearly winning the SEC West.

State did the same thing with Croom.

1. Mullen
2. Sherill
3. Stansbury
4. R. Williams
5. Cohen

There was a time when Polk would have been top 2. If I ranked based on how I felt only when they were here, it would be totally different.
