IMO, The Exorcist was the most iconic horror movie ever. It transitioned horror movies from the likes of vampires, monsters and zombies to an altogether different type movie.
As a kid, I had nightmares about old Drac, Werewolves, etc.... but grew out of it. The Exorcist and that type movie still gives me the willies.

Nonsensical fear of ******** is one of the unhealthy products of religious faith.

-Friday the 13th, part 3. When Jason takes the mask off, I nearly crapped.
-The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I didn't sleep for a year.

The shining
Burnt offerings
The babadook I thought was solid
Solaris - sci fi but freaky
Christine - guilty pleasure

Otherwise I find the themes so repetitive as to be boring. Gimme a weird take.

Maybe not the best, but give me Devil's Rejects and House of 1,000 Corpses.

I can't stand any Rob Zombie crap. Especially that abomination of a Halloween movie.

I was a big fan of the Nightmare on Elm St movies. A bit cheesy, but man Freddy was an awesome character. Not only did he kill you in your dreams, but he screwed with your head while he did it. I like Jason and Michael Myers, but the silent but deadly just isn't as good as the smarta$$ killer.

Zombie (not Rob) movies are my favorite. I like all of the (Living) Dead movies (Night, Return, Dawn, Day, etc) and some of the newer ones aren't bad (a couple Resident Evil's, 28 Days/Weeks Later, World War Z, The Crazies).

There aren't very many actually scary movies anymore though. Mostly they are more action than horror. I love a good scare, but nothing hardly does that like the older 70's-90's movies.

I'm not a fan for the fact they're usually so poorly produced they aren't remotely believable. Now, certain ones are good and very plausible but in general they're awful.

Halloween 2 original is my favorite because it starts so fast. I also love the descent and the new Texas chainsaw massacre

The thing....cant believe this hasn't been said yet.

Sinister was pretty good, the original texas chainsaw massacre is good and I think it being old and filmed cheaply adds to it.

Honestly the scariest movie at the time was Texas chainsaw massacre. Watched in a basement with girlfriend and another couple in pitch black.

High school was fun.

Just saw a trailer for the new It. Looks really good. The first one scared the crap out of me when I was young. I've never looked at clowns or sewers the same

The original Night of the living Dead. Nothing says scary like zombies in black and white.

Watched a bizarre movie on Netflix a few months ago; Baskin. It's Hungarian, I think, and I believe it's a remake. It's one of the better horror movies I've seen that was recently made.

The bathroom scene. Tension you could cut with a knife. Notice: Jack Torrance is looking in the mirror pretty much the whole time:

Debate over sci-fi or horror aside, Alien Covenant is getting mixed reviews.. but everyone is saying the deaths and gore are it's strongest feature. Might have to check it out this weekend.
