The 6-foot, 175-pound kicker said he has been in touch with Nebraska coach Mike Riley as well as graduate manager and special teams assistant Nick Smith the last two months. He attended NU’s spring game and left impressed by the crowd, facilities and academic options. He shared a meal with senior-to-be and returning kicker Drew Brown along with sophomore punter Caleb Lightbourn that weekend and “had a great time.”

Nebraska still knows plenty about Pickering, who is rated the No. 2 kicker nationally and a five-star prospect at the position by the specialist evaluator Kohl’s Kicking. He made all 49 of his extra-point tries last fall and 20 of 27 field goals, including a long of 49 yards and two four-kick games. His 42-yarder in Hoover’s final game helped Birmingham’s largest suburb win the state title in Class 7A. A member of the MaxPreps 2016 Junior All-American team, he also sent 66 of his 79 kickoffs for touchbacks.

Pickering is rated a 4.5-star punter and No. 29 nationally at that spot, but said college coaches want him to focus on field goals and kickoffs at the next level.

“(Nebraska) told me they wanted the best and they want this class to be one of the best classes they’ve ever had,” Pickering said. “It was just really humbling to hear that.”

Great stats on kick offs. He has won games with long kicks under pressure. Big upside and a very good punter - sounds like he could be the back up and team with another kicker for duties. With all our pro connections, he should jump on board. Sounds like a great person. GBR

Nebraska has faired well at getting kickers to the next level as well. He could be a backup the first year and start 3 years. Or redshirt and then start 4.

This class is going to be real special. Laser focus on getting the right talent everywhere. Maybe the sleeping giant is starting to stir.

He sits only if the walk on kicker beats him out. Drew Brown will be gone by the time this kid is on campus, if he comes.

Edit: but you are exactly right, we have fared very well with kickers!

So I've been away from this site for a long while until recently. Maybe someone could answer a few questions for me. Why doesn't he have a rival's star rating? Shouldn't kickers be awarded stars the same as any other position?

Also, can someone explain why he has so few offers for such a quality kicker? Or is it possible he has more and this is all that the recruiting sites are aware of? Or there just isn't a great need for kickers this year? Not that it matters much, he's a very good get for the program. I'm just curious. Thanks!

Kickers can't be evaluated in terms of offers like other players because you only take a kicker when you need one-which is only every 3-4 years if you do it right. Only a couple of the top 5 rated kickers from last year's class had lots of other offers. Ohio State signed the 4th rated kicker from last year and he didn't have a single other offer. Drew Brown's only offer was from us. As far as not having a rating-I'm sure he will get one sometime. It's not unusual, especially this early and especially for a kicker to not have a star rating yet.

Good get, sucks we have to use a schollie on a kicker during this particular cycle when the class is so small but a huge part of the game, glad he's N.

Oh oh. According to this story he hit 20/27 FG attempts. According to the post thread referencing the story from Scout, he only hit 19/27.

Yeah, as annoying as that is (because jacking up our class rating is fuuuuun), that's exactly right. Kickers are specialists and cannot be rated like normal players; they don't really need to test many of the athletic abilities of other players, they just have to do one thing: kick the ball REALLY accurately over a great distance.

If this kid is the #2 kicker in the country, that's a really, really big deal. People sometimes forget what a huge game-changing effect special teams, particularly field goal and extra point units, are. That can frequently wind up being the deciding factor in relatively close games. This kid is going to give us that edge.

Not to be a stargazer, but if they don't rate him according to his skill at his position, then his lack of rating shouldn't be counted with the rest of the class.

In the end, I don't care if it brings our number down a bit or not, because we got, arguably, the best (or 2nd best) kicker in the class. That's all that matters.

As someone already pointed out this kid played at Hoover. If you can snag a player from there and make an in road there you do it. That program is loaded with talent. It also helps that the kid looks to be a stud specialist.

Most fans question giving a scholarship to a kicker in a year like this with low numbers already until said kicker hits a big FG to win a clutch game for NU. I have no issue with the staff targeting a top 3 kicker. If they can get one, which is a position of need with Brown graduating, then they've solidified the position for possibly the next 4 years. If they couldn't land a top kicker this cycle then you try next year and hope for the best during season in the fall??? No thanks.

Yeah, I think you get the best players you can in positions of need and offer them the full package. This year isn't about wasting scholarships at all, its about using them judiciously to fill in exactly the players we want/need at positions. This is kind of an "icing on the cake" year in terms of being able to focus on very specific, skilled players after last years class of 20 filling in a lot of numbers.

Pickering is definitely going to matter and we'll be damn glad we picked him up in a couple of years.

I think this is a great pick up for us. With that said, I think he's going to have good competition from the walk on Frahm from Burke. I witnessed that kids leg strength first hand last fall. In the playoff game against East they lined him up to take a shot at a 60 yarder I think at the end of the half. He didn't make it but just to have the coach think that was your best option for scoring from that distance says a lot about his leg strength.
