area so I choose to live there but I respect your point of view. Ain't it great that we live in a country that gives us the freedom to live and work where we want to and where one can achieve untold wealth without having to be born into it.<div>

as i tell people when this subject and they love Mayor Mary, Germantown is the city Mary always says she isemulatingand they had a female mayor when i lived there in the '90's. She created everything that Mary wanted/wants for Madison, but the difference was she was pro business and never underhanded. She understood business and business development. Mary could have done that too but it's not in her. (not to mention thehideousarchitecture that she requires to get something approved). For all of you Mary lovers there is a ever growing support group of former small business owners and developers that meets in an undisclosed location that will welcome you with open arms after you have your first meeting with the great mayor to get your business built or started.

where you can afford to live there. Don't kid yourself, the Madison general fund gets a great percentage of its money from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Lowe's, and everything else that's coming in the future. <div>
</div><div>You should be thanking the people who fought through Mary's political, architectural, and egotistical ******** to get that stuff done.</div>

That might be the most tacky/gaudy thing I've seen in my life. The souped up Wal-Mart was well done, I'll give the city that. The CVS and all that new development is awful. I feel embarrassed for the people that live there when I go back and visit my folks. I'm all for having tasteful building codes which preserve the character of the town, but that building went waaaay overboard. I hope that isn't a sign of things to come...

glad we agree. on a related note, kinda interesting that those poor peacocks were the only Christmas decorations too tacky for "the city"

now is 2400 sq ft. I believe. We are trying to hold up the minimums in the Gluckstadt/Germantown area as well. It is the key along with all the other points you just made.
I can live with ordinances requiring certain levels of maintenance, but to simply try to price people of certain type out of living in an incorporated city is ********. May be hard for some Madison people to understand, but there are actually decent human beings that live in houses under 2400 square feet. I'm sure the results are nice, but not worth it to live in that type of place.

In fact, most that are in the originalMadison areaare much smaller (Hoy Road neighborhoods, Traceland North, etc.).

It makes sense. Think 20 or 30 years down the road. Same with outlawing apartments - at SOME point in the future, no matter how nice, they will eventually go downhill. I have lived in The Woodlands, TX (master planned community, like Madison on crack), and they even have some old apartment complexes that have gone to crap.

They had 4 huge (I'm talking so huge you wouldn't believe it) urns topping the spires on the 4 corners of the building. Mary took one look at those and said those are coming down. Just about every other business in town looks great, but you're right about the CVS. They tried way too hard and came up with an eyesore.

and the council. They were part of the architectural requirements. It wasn't until after the fact, and after it was made fun of relentlessly on radio and in print, that they were removed. Sounds a lot like the peacocks.

Never would I have though that what they have now is the toned down version. That's hilarious...

after the complaints started rolling in, the mayor had the earns taken down. She required CVS spend thousand of dollars on the *#$@$#! horrible things. They had to bring several versions of the earns to her for her to pick out the one she liked and then she acted like it was CVS's fault that they were taken down.<div>
</div><div>I had a fairly renowned architect in town 5 or 6 years ago to do some work and as giving him a tour so he could get an idea of the flavor of Madison and when we got off of the interstate he looked at the Shell station on the and said "Oh My God, pull over and let me take a picture. This going in my portfolio and slide show for my students of what not to do." we spent the next hour riding around Madison with him taking pictures of thehorrendous architecture of many of the commercial buildings in Madison. His favorite was the fire station next to Madison Middle School.<div>I can't seem to quit replying to this thread...</div></div>
