Saw this on the OT rant once. Can you name the first cell phone provider you used and the year you started. Century CellUNet for me. Got my sweet-*** AudioVox cell phone with whip antennae at the dealer that used to be right above where Buffalo Peak is at Highland Village. Would have been 1994. Paid $200.00 for phone. Plan was 20.00/month for 200 minutes.

Cell South? 1995 maybe, had a corded phone in my ugly-*** Bronco II. It was not removeable, and even had to have an antenna drilled through the back glass. I think it wicked expensive to use so it was for emergencies. I may have had a big trapezoidal one that was "portable" too, or maybe my mom did. Too long ago. I also remember going on a road trip to Austin, and all the kids had cell phones, and we were like "that's so dumb, why would anyone need a phone? Plus you can't ditch people if they can call you!" Now I have no idea how the hell we ever met up without cell phones. I guess we made plans?

I got mine in the summer of 2000 from BellSouth right before heading off to college. I still remember the number. I cancelled the plan when I went overseas for a year. Unfortunate--as I liked that one better than my current one, which I've now had since 2005.

The first person I knew with a cell phone--or email, for that matter--was my grandmother, who at various points had giant bag phones and car phones before, it seemed, anyone else did. But this is a woman who, at age 90, wears a red leather coat to church and claims to be 26.

Cell South Motorola phone 1988. If there was a tower within 10 miles you were good to go.....however it cost a fortune to talk on that sucker.

First phone was the previously mentioned AudioVox. Still have it in the attic somewhere. Second was the starTac from Motorola. Third was the first Erikson offered from BellSouth Mobility. Next was a Nokia then back to the V90 from Motorola. Then another Nokia and then went to the first Blackberry when Cingular took over. Stayed with BB till the iPhone had been out about 2 years. Went to the 3GS then 4s and now 5S. I always forgo the first new iPhone models and wait till their xS model comes out.

"I'm calling from a CAR PHONE!"

My old man had a true car-phone in the late 80's. 'Cellular Southern' or something. The equipment took up damn near the whole trunk. No clue as to the carrier, but it would only work around Jackson.

I got a Nokia bar-phone with a stub antenna in '97 with Cingular. Still have that number today.

Yeah my dad had a big motorola phone in his truck back around 1990. I guess my first phone was a little Nokia phone through bellsouth mobility around 97? I left it in my truck and never took it out. About 2000, the guy that we bought our two way radios through got us these cellphone kits for our trucks. It was a cradle for a Nokia that charged it, had a handset, exterior antenna, and speaker phone feature. I could have full service everywhere I went.
