Tough conversation: is Allar good enough?

Kaytron looks better. Luke Reynolds. We needed Allar to improve and he has not. The O-Line is playing good enough. Allar is the key.
Why is Allar the key? It's clearly scheme
I disagree that Kaytron looks better. He looks the same which is a win

We’re in the age of professional college sports now. 10-2 or 9-3 doesn’t matter if you make the playoffs. The day of losing a regular season game and your championship hopes being shot are over. I think a 9-3 regular season record with a loss in the championship game is a more successful season than going undefeated in the regular season and losing in your first round of the playoffs.
I agree.

There have been many PSU teams like the ones in 1997 and 1999 that peaked in the first half of the season and regressed. My hope is that this team progressively gets better and peaks in early November. However, with that said, the offensive execution so far, especially in the last two games, has been very disappointing.
In the new playoff era the most important thing is to get in. Attain a good seed, stay healthy and peak late.

3-0, ranked #2, outscored opponents 132-17. 5-star starting QB who is awful. 5-star senior RB who is awful.

😞

52 points against Villanova. Must have been 15 field goals, one defensive TUDDIE. o_O .

😞
Can't you read? WE DESERVE BETTER
How did you forgot a coach who is AWFUL? 😤

So I guess the QB is not key to anything. All AKs fault, LOL.
The QB is often to blame. Allar can and needs to play better as do many other guys. He's not the primary issue though nor close to it.

This is like when people blame the goalie in hockey. They just don't know better.

So you agree Allar has to play better?

To answer the question the thread topic asks, he has been good enough to get the team to 3-0. I don’t think his level of play will be good enough to beat Oregon but the defense looks damn good so maybe it will be. I definitely don’t think he’s been good enough to win a national championship. Most importantly, I think he’s good enough to play a lot better than he has so far.

Allen isn't faster. Reynolds is better based on what? Being given a chance?
Are we sure the WRs are better or just hopeful?
So you actually believe Reynolds has not improved one bit since last season? Got it. Kaytron does not look faster? Got it. You are now just being disagreeable to hold on to your point that Allar's play is not concerning and lumping his bad play into the wash as no worse than anyone.

Allen has been really good since the SMU game, and Reynolds has AA and future high NFL draft pick written all over him.

The fact is that Allar's play so far has not been great, merely good. I agree with Landon when he says Allar's talents are a mismatch for Kotelnicky's offense. We'll see against Oregon whether they continue trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, the hole being an RPO offense.

We haven't utilized the RPO nor the Zone Read aspects of AKs offense YET THIS SEASON.

Allar did keep the ball some last year. He has yet to keep it this year. Until we see what we try at Oregon, it's insufficiently data. The fact remains that we ran the same pass route 7-10 times vs Villanova. (Outside WR Go, Slot WR Out) Does anybody really believe AK shucked the playbook from '24? We have seen more. And we saw less during this 3 game stretch.

I don't believe that AKs offense is a round hole and Allar a squad peg. I do think defenses are getting so fast and athletic that a QB has to be mobile now more than ever, but also has to be able to throw. I also think we could run our TEs (particular Reynolds) up the seam all game and not be stopped the last 3 games.

Regardless, the same people will spout the same lines win or lose. It's kinda what we do.

3-0 is the spin. Would you rather be 0-3 and have the #1 rated QB? Taquan Roberson is rated higher if ratings are your goal.
Of course I'd rather be 3-0. That's a dumb question. That said I'm confident that we would also be 3-0 with Grunkenmeyer or Pribula.

I think the spin is to dismiss Allar's early season performance and poor QBR. It's not a good sign that he's struggling against very weak competition. Let's hope things improve.

The fact is if Allar does not improve significantly then this team will lose to Oregon and certainly OSU. Possibly a third game but if not then we could squeeze into the playoff but will lose to any top 10 team.

I hope I'm wrong and he elevates his play but the data does not lie, his stats are abysmal and you see it on the field as well. People can blame it on everything thing except Allar but that is simply not the case, he leads the offense.

The one schematic/play calling change we need to make is to have him run more. We have to be willing for him to keep the ball to keep the defense off balance. I don't know how many times but at least 5, maybe 7-8. Also, he needs to be quicker about just tucking it and running when the play breaks down. If there is an opportunity to head up field for positive yardage versus throwing into tight coverage then he needs to make that decision quickly. He can always slide to protect himself, I notice he does not do that often.
I suspect Allar was told to limit his running in the first 3 games to avoid injury. I expect some designed running plays for Allar vs Oregon.

What have you seen that indicates improvement? He's only getting opportunities.

Kaytron doesn't look faster. He's still the same great back as before.

Reynolds or Kaytron being better wouldn't have any impact on if Allar's play was concerning

I agree but apparently they have shown no improvement and are no better.
Both of those statements were true. Allen has been the better back the entire time he's been here. Reynolds lack opportunity because Warren is better. Them being good isn't new or surprising.

So we didn’t like McSorley, and we didn’t like Clifford, and now we don’t like Allar. So should we start not liking Grunk now, or just wait until his first win as a starter that isn’t by 75 points?
No, you’re doing it all wrong. Grunk is the back up QB, but he is obviously better than the starter. You have to wait until Grunk is the starter then you start hating him. At this point Grunk’s back up will obviously be better and then you start calling for him to start. Repeat though infinity.

I hope so because we need it. If he is no threat to run it then the D doesn't even have to pay attention to him.

Like Devante Ross's lone catch on Saturday?

I thought that was a good wrinkle. They had been running Pena in the slot and Ross outside primarily. I noticed they started flipping them vs Villanova. I'd have to go back and check the film to see where Ross was lined up, but they had been running the gadget plays to Pena through 2 weeks.

I think we should be running plays like this more with Ross and Pena (and very likely Denmark and Howard). Of course, I don't think the plan was to spam these plays just for the sake of getting yards. The plan seemed to be to work on the down field passing rhythm.

Odd

They have both improved. Just because Reynolds didn't have opportunities last season doesn't mean he has not improved. Of course you are at off season workouts and practices and know he has not improved.

Not even close. Not even 2/3 in the big10.
According to ESPN:
1. Jeremiyah Love
2. Nicholas Singleton
3. Kaytron Allen
4. Makhi Hughes
5. Isaac Brown

And thats in the nation, not the Big…so I’d say I’m pretty close.

You're stating he's improved based on what? Using this logic everyone has improved. They're all working hard.

No Allar hasn't shown any improvement...we haven't played anyone yet where you're going to see improvement. How they perform against real competition will dictate that.
Allen looks faster...against slower competition. Doesn't mean he's not a great back
Reynolds is doing exactly what one would reasonable expect. His only issue last year was a lack of opportunity.
Saying someone hasn't improved through 3 scrimmages isn't an insult.

Drew's problems have more to do with the amount of time it takes him to make a read.... and the quality of the read he ultimately makes... then AK. The play last Saturday where Drew butchered his read directly off the snap (Kyron Hudson ran a Flag Pattern from the left-slot and immediately broke open and was running by himself 15 yards behind the closest defender as the Villanova secondary blew their matchup coverage assignments), then took forever to go through additional reads in a panicked fashion to the point where he began to feel pressure, when the ball should have been out long prior (it had zero to do with the OL or pressure) and then he finally chooses to throw it to the TE on the sideline where the defender has near insurmountable inside-out leverage was a MICROCOSM of Drew's problems at QB.

Drew's best throw of the entire game is also instructive - the throw to Trebor Pena running a Skinny Post just prior to halftime. Drew made the CORRECT read off the snap, saw that Pena had "inside leverage" on the DB (i.e., advantage receiver on a Skinny Post) - he immediately committed to the correct throw (a heater), got the ball out quickly.... made a great throw and threw a TD pass.

Against Oregon, Drew is going to need to take off after 3 to 4 seconds in the pocket if he has not committed to something.... he should keep his eyes downfield and throw on the move if something breaks open, but he has to stop sitting in the pocket with happy feet and patting the ball for an eternity until pressure develops.... and then throwing extremely late to 3rd and 4th reads that are no longer open by the time he throws it. If Drew takes off after 3 or 4 seconds, it will put far more pressure on the defense as he now has the addition option of threatening the defense by just continuing to run which often will allow receivers to break open late as the defense breaks down trying to address the QB in the open field.

In essence, Drew does not "extend plays" like great QBs do, but rather just "delays" plays/reads with no meaningful improvement.
