What's something that you do that is so different from what you did as a child?

I'll go first.

When I was growing up in the 1970s and 1980s we always slept on top of a fitted sheet, slept under a sheet and then under a blanket. For a few years after I moved out of my parent's house I did the same. Then for decades I rejected sleeping under a sheet because I didn't like the feel or how cold they could be in the winter.

Starting six years ago I slept under a plush blanket, up to a year ago. I now sleep on top of a plush blanket (that's of course on top of a fitted sheet), and under another plush blanket. The plush blanket I sleep on extends over my pillows.

EDITED: it seems some are confused about the premise of the thread. What are YOU doing now that doesn't fit the traditional way of doing something. Not "times sure are changing".

A clock with hands that go round and round versus a clock that just shows you the digits. Anyone remember an alarm clock that was just the round and round and you could only set the time, not AM and PM. It would go off every 12 hours if you didn't turn it off.

When we were kids there was a room of the house that was off limits. It had white carpet and was for guests only. I remember it well since I dropped a cup of kool aid on that carpet. Also there was cups and plates for when company came over. Today everything is as you see it. Plates are the same and we don't close off anything unless it's to keep the dog out.

We also eat out way more now than back then. Going out meant going to do something exciting. Now it just like any other day

Black Friday used to be a big thing with our family. Not the 70's but I remember in the 90's - 00's getting together with the ads on thanksgiving and figuring where we were going. Then i would be the guy at 3 in the morning getting in line and my wife would follow later. We would have a good breakfast together and then I would go home to get some sleep while she kept shopping. Nothing like that now.

More women in the workforce equals more eating out.

Rotary-dial phone on the kitchen wall with a 15' cord ... now everybody has cellphones, but nobody ever answers.
I miss the days you had to call your friends house and ask to speak to your friend. It's funny tho somehow my friends parents have managed to keep a landline this whole time and when they don't answer the phone it still has my buddy's 5 year old voice on there saying "we're not home right now but leave a message and we will give you a call back"

It's really crazy they've been able to keep that same recording almost 30 years without it getting erased accidentally or something.

Running down to Southland Park in the morning during the summer and hanging out all day - WITHOUT parents following along! Riding my bike to sports practices and games with my friends - WITHOUT a helmet! Trying to hang on to the bars on the merry-go-round while all the big kids (high schoolers) tried to spin it so fast you'd fly off.

Dogs. When I was growing up even in the 90’s, dogs weren’t not meant to be in the house. “Dogs are meant to be outside”. All of my dogs were outside. If one was severely injured, we put it down with the double barrel.

Today, I snuggle with a sheppit (half Pitt half German shep) also best dog I’ve ever owned. If you need a new one, it’s the most intelligent, sweet, and defensive dogs you’ll ever have. The Pitt part of them is a Velcro dog, they stay right with you everywhere in the house. Outside it’s go go gadget Sheppard. They’re patrolling the outside perimeter. Intelligence off the map. Learns new words in 24 hours. Opens my fridge and brings me sprite when I’m not near the kitchen.

I went off the rails there but yes the dog thing is my biggest change from growing up 80’s 90’s. I do believe Americans have lost their minds a little bit with the dogs, that’s another difference in the eras. To me personally the dog people have really lost reality to a large degree. Dogs are not more important than people no matter how much you care about them. I know people that will tell you they love their dog as their child even as much as their children. To me that’s almost inpatient style mental. But that would be the biggest change to me. I love my dog and they’re wonderful creatures no doubt put her by God for us. But my dog would starve before a homeless man I’ve never met. Sorry

I keep my dog in the back room with a baby gate. Sheds to much to be running around. But kind of funny story on how people are about dogs now.. I live in a typical small town neighborhood.

As I said my dog stays inside and sometimes I feel bad that he doesn't get to go outside as much as he should since I work a lot of hours. My town is extremely strict on the dog leash stuff. Kind of weird imo because I grew up in the country and I'm just not used to it. I get it tho some people have mean dogs and they can't just run around.

So last week I went to rural
King and bought a cable for him to run around outside without me having to stand there with him...anyway the first time I ever put him on this cable and tried to give him some fresh air and semi freedom the dude got off not even ten minutes in. I went outside and he was gone. No dog no cable. So he is running around town with a 40 ft cable dragging behind him.

I spend all week looking for him and endless times telling the kids he is gone without trying to make them upset. I told them he is probably running around with the deer out in the fields or something. Anything I could to make it seem less likely he was dead or gone forever.

I had been checking the Facebook page for the pound all week but nothing. I finally happened to check a different page two days ago and what do you know there he is. First post on the page is him at the pound with the title saying I'm in jail my people come get me out.

So I messaged the lady and she was instantly defensive and kind of rude. She made me prove it was my dog which is fine I reckon I had no problem with that part but what was funny is...she was pissed off because I guess she thought I had him tied up outside. She said the sheriff just made a post about bringing your dogs inside because of the heat. She didn't want to give me my dog back. I had to explain to her that he had literally only been on it ten minutes and that was the first time ever. I'm not sure how he escaped but he was found a few streets over tangled up in somebody's tree.

I finally went and got him yesterday morning but boy did I have to kind of go at it with this pound lady. Just funny to me how people are about dogs these days. I've never had a inside dog. Never had a dog die from heat or anything. I know humans are turning into whimps but good grief animals can stand to be outside. It's not like it's been that hot this year anyway.

She sure made me feel like a shittee owner for a brief second. Ol *****

Cruising on a weekend night. Just a bunch of guys driving slow in a circle around Preston Hwy. Now our young people just sit in a Walmart parking lot.

Used to sleep with feet under blanket as a kid. Turns out having your feet uncovered is the best way to sleep.

When my wife puts the kids to bed she always closes the door. It’s how she was raised. When I put them to bed I leave the door open. We have debated it for a long time in good fun what is considered normal.

Remember the good ole days before caller ID and star 69 when you could call someone at 2 in the morning and ask if their refrigerator was running and they just had to try to figure out who it was?
I always liked calling the local grocery store & asking if they have "Prince Albert" in a can, they'd say "why yes we do" then I'd say "you better let him out or he'll suffocate". 🤣🤣🤣

PMC (Preston Music Center) and the old White Castle location was always a good place to stop and chill. Preston was a cool place to cruise back in the 80s and early 90s. You'd need a bullett proof vest today.

When I got my job I'm currently in at 18, I was scared to death I wouldn't wake up so I had one of those round wind up clocks with the 2 bells on top and would put it in a pot across the room. That way I HAD to get up to turn it off. I may or may not have broke one or two of those.

We rarely ate out. Occasionally after church on Sunday we’d got to the Dinner Bell in Maceo. Even on vacation, I remember pulling over and eating sandwiches on a picnic table somewhere.

I did not carry on this tradition.
