While I'm not against bringing in a back up point guard, I do question Kyree Walker. He's like a 6-5 or 6-6 small forward. It would be like cloning Oweh and Aberdeen hoping for a point guard right? Only stats I saw by quickly looking was when he was in the G league and he shot 17 % from 3, had a 1 assist per 2 turnover ratio and was listed as a small forward. Not sure we need more players in that log jam position on this team. Maybe I'm wrong and he is a PG, but that seems wild we'd be connected to Kyree.
Also, I get this doesn’t mean anything in the modern college sports landscape, but he’s 25 years old. I graduated from UK two and a half years ago and he’s a year older than me!

We need JJ to develop quickly. Watch JLowe and learn.
Unfortunately, the way Jasper plays, with his natural game, him playing the 1 would not help him or the team. He's a natural 2 who can create his own shot. Could he be the 1? Sure. Based off what I have seen, not a good position. He could do it yes, but his mental has to change and when you've been a natural 2 you're whole life, that may be challenging. He would "want" to do it in order to make a quicker develop of a 1-2 combo guard.

Agreed. Playing Jasper at the 1 won’t help us or him. Give him time. He’ll be a good shoot-first guard next year imo

Bring back Oscar and Hagens. Redshirt Jelly and Noah. Oscar and JQ would dominate the boards for sure.

Seems like a mistake to not at least keep an eye out for someone. Lowe has had three shoulder injuries/scares and our non-conference schedule hasn't even wrapped up yet.
Having faith in your players is fine, but realistically we've looked completely lost on offense with anyone else on the team running the point.

When Lowe inevitably injures his shoulder again in the SEC, it will be interesting to see Mark Pope biting his lip and looking at the scoreboard, wondering why he didn't get a mid-season addition.
Even when he wins a good game the only thing I think is that he’ll do or say something next that’ll make me say: “This isn’t the guy.”

Like he says he gets us and Kentucky, but he really doesn’t.

I've never watched him play. But just going off of stats and what evaluators have said, Aberdeen looks substantially superior to Forrest at the PG spot.
If Forrest is a willing passer then he’s an upgrade to Aberdeen playing the PG position.

Aberdeen could play PG if he wasn’t constantly looking for his shot only.

I know that we need to play Lowe in order to get the offense flow going but if I was Pope I’d sit him as much as possible. Would not play him tonight and I wouldn’t play him a lot through SEC play due to the shoulder screens he’s gonna be targeted with like Butler was last year. I’d only play him in 2nd halfs unless we are getting tumbled. Limit his play as much as possible and save him for the NCAA and SEC tournament.
Bubble wrap 24-7.

I still hope we add a PG mid-season but realistically that’s going to mean likely having to expand the rotation and it could be a challenge to find someone willing to accept the role. There’s a reason Acaden dipped —- most guys don’t want to be set in as a backup, especially since Lowe has another year of eligibility after this one.

I can't argue with that. Aberdeen is frustrating me more as the season has progressed. But again - just off of what I've read - Forrest is about scoring not assists.

If you play 1st semester, you can't transfer and be eligible at new place 2nd semester. There was a recent transfer that DIDN'T play 1st semester and is immediately eligible.

We could, apparently, add someone from g league or europe.
If a player played 1st semester last year and didn’t play the 2nd semester. They could have sit out thru the end of this first semester and be eligible this 2nd semester.

I don’t know if they have to withdraw from school after 1st semester or if they could just decide to sit out.

Pope can sell a g-leaguer on the idea of point guard being completely open, because it basically is with Lowe being game to game. Then you put Aberdeen at shooting guard full time. Chandler backs up Oweh and Aberdeen. JJ falls out of the rotation until he's ready to play defense. Noah falls out of the rotation. Jelavic stays out of the rotation as well.

Garrison out of the rotation as well.

1I really think Acaden Lewis de-committing is what has put this team on thin ice. Pope figured him to backup Lowe, and he would have been more than capable.
100%

It’s still inexcusable that Pope didn’t go out and get somebody else, but at least he DID have a plan to prevent the situation we had with Butler. It just fell through.
WAG: Pope overestimated his backup point guard by committee: Johnson, Chandler, Aberdeen. On paper you’d think they could get it done, much like last year, but just not enough ball handling or floor command among them.

I’m good with it if they find the right guy. I wouldn’t read too much into Pope downplaying it on the radio. There’s probably a little movement there, but he may prefer it hush-hush.

Ok. I’m not going to debate you if you don’t agree on the defense being elite with JQ and Mo healthy in the frontcourt. Neither of us know for sure yet, but I’ll bet you we finish top 10 in KP defensively.
I won’t agree until I at least see a few games. If the statistics agree, then fine. But as it stands, we’re a little more than above average on defense… statistically, at least.

I mostly agree with this, but I bet if we developed an inside game, Noah could be freed up for some timely catch-and-shoots.

This. Noah is shooting 42% from three, on a squad that shoots only 31% as a team. You can’t just give up on the guy. And that 42% mostly came without a point guard who can create quality looks for others. Hell, Chandler is shooting like 40% from three and you have people on Twitter calling for him to be benched as well. It’s lunacy. We NEED both of those guys if we’re going to have a chance this year.

The issue with Noah is that he's basically a taller Cameron Mills. He offers very little outside of shooting. Chandler at least can play defense and can handle the ball. Noah has to play better defense. The identity of this team is leaving his skill set behind.

No, I get it. But Kyle Wiltjer was equally horrid defensively in 2012, and yet still contributed. I know Wiltjer had a little more size, but I firmly believe the presence of JQ and Lowe together will make Noah’s time on the floor a net positive. Just not a big enough sample size to accurately judge him yet, IMO.

We have 14 real players as of now. Zach Tow doesn't really count I would assume, right?

Illinois just picked up a forward, Toni Bilić, 6 days ago from Croatia for this season.
Illinois has a lot of international guys

Since we're dreaming I want to play the PF position alongside JQ. I just need to grow about a foot, add nearly 100#, and be 40 years younger. Goodness, I would be a monster or as they say now...a grown man. lol Well, don't laugh I still have that dream occasionally,
Only slightly off topic I’ve had that dream like 40 times where one of our main guys goes down in the Final Four and Pitino is able to work a deal where he is able to start ME. Weirdest thing about it is every single time I am gullible enough in my sleep to believe wow, all those other times I was dreaming but now it’s really happening!
