Tre is a very polished playmaker and defender. The NBA advises college for polishing fundamentals, not for lack of shooting ability. They believe they can teach it and they certainly can. For example, Tatum is around 40% 3PT in the NBA, around 33% here at Duke. Let’s throw the “stay at Duke and learn to shoot!” theory out the window.
I really, really want him to stay. Forcing myself to realistically admit that it’s smarter for him to go to the NBA is hard, but it’s the truth. He is traditional “1” and Coach K has committed himself to positionless. He doesn’t provide any off-ball attributes to our offense and our style of play is a disservice to his abilities. I’m not claiming that our surrounding talent makes him look better than advertised playmaking wise, but he won’t have it better than he currently does.
Lastly...... I don’t want to bring up negative circumstances and I’m sure his mother is one hell of a fighter, unfortunately cancer can quickly turn for the worse. I pray she defeats the disease and even if so, these circumstances put life in perspective. Most kids want nothing more than to make their parents proud. This could also place a fast-track on his NBA dreams.
Edit: His lack of explosiveness and subpar ability to drive the ball will keep him out of the lottery. Staying an additional year (or even graduating) won’t improve his God-given intangibles. The NBA droooooools over height, potential and athleticism.
