That was one of the more obvious “this ain’t gonna work” hires I can think of. From Day 1 it seemed like a dumb hire.
Yeah, the "Hey, let's get our own Deion" hiring trend has run its course. Love or hate Deion, at least he put in some time at an FCS school before moving up to an FBS job.

Such a terrible hire for UAB. You knew it was going to be bad when he said on a radio interview that he’d have it easier from a personal perspective than he did at the hs he was coaching

Didn’t UAB have a good coach a few years ago? Where did he end up?

Bill Clark- retired due to health reasons

It was a terrible decision to hire Dilfer, and another terrible decision to bring him back for a third season. UAB hired him because of his time on ESPN and working with the Elite 11 quarterback camp. They thought they were getting a mini Deion Sanders, and Dilfer's "celebrity" would bring recruits to UAB. It was a stupid train of thought, because Trent freaking Dilfer is not a celebrity. He was a middling ESPN analyst and is known mostly for being the worst starting quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl. UAB had a good thing going with Bill Clark, and after he retired, they crapped the bed with hiring Dilfer.
