When in Appomattox, take approximately a 30-minute trip east and head into Farmville to eat at one of their several excellent local restaurants (below) and also take a trip to the High Bridge Trail.
Appomattox is mostly ****** fast food, I'm sure there is a decent local spot or two but the options are much better in Farmville.
Of course, you could also take a 30-minute trip West and head into Lynchburg too and have a lot more options. But there is a heck of a lot more traffic, Farmville is a nice little slow place to visit. If you just want something relaxing Lynchburg is not the place to visit.
Downtown is dominated by the world famous Green Front furniture and accessory stores - they have taken up residence in seemingly over a dozen buildings and they claim to deliver all along the east coast. A lot of people come to Farmville just to go to them stores. It's really damn pricey though.
Farmville is also home to Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College. H-SC is the 18th oldest college in the USA and the house where the college was founded is still located on campus.
If you wanted to spend the night in the town, Hotel Weyanoke is the place to stay. Really nice, pretty good prices with a discount for first-timers, has several restaurants inside the hotel including a roof top bar, and it's right in the middle of downtown with very to fairly short walks to most of what there is to do in Farmville.
- Fishin' Pig - barbeque and fish place. I've literally never had a thing I didn't thoroughly enjoy, probably my all-time favorite non-chain restaurant. I am extremely picky with fish and I love their fish. If you are there at lunchtime on Monday's they have a half price lunch menu, one person can walk out of there paying just $5-7 (depending on how much you tip) if you order one meal off the half price menu with water.
- Walker's Diner - tiny little diner but good stuff.
- Merk's - Another diner type place, most expansive menu in the area. Would have gone there a lot more but it was a good 20ish minute drive from my house - and that's with hitting next to nothing as far as traffic goes - so it wasn't particularly convenient.
- Pino's - Pizza and Italian
- Perini - Pizza and Italian
- Uptown - Coffee and cafe place. I've only been there once because it was out of the way for where I lived. What I had was good but I've heard good stuff from others.
- Charley's Waterfront - on the pricier side and I've only been there once because of the prices. Talking like $10+ for a sandwich, some salads costing upwards of $10, 8 oz. steaks close to $30. And that is not including the cost of beverage and tip.
- 3rd Street Brewery - not really a restaurant since they don't serve food unless there are food trucks there, but a good brewery+bar with activities going on most nights. Popular hang out spot for adults.
