No, has nothing to do with basketball!
We are tripping to Charlottesville, Va, this month to see Monticello (return trip for me-1970s’ repeat), Appomattox, stroll the UVA campus, etc. Any short trip/restaurant suggestions for the area? A friend said we should return home up Rt 60 in WVA and check the authentic quilts...that doesn’t excite me, but might interest the wife.

Grew up in that area. Moore's Country Store between Appomattox and Lynchburg on 460, just east of Lynchburg. Best GD chili dog you will ever eat.

Entire Shenandoah Valley/ Blue Ridge Pkwy.
Thank you, finally a post from a non comedian!

Give Mel's a try for lunch. It's a small dive on West Main Street in Charlottesville. Kind of an old hometown meat & 3 place you'd enjoy. The fried chicken is excellent. Not much room inside but fair amount of outdoor seating. As a native Virginian, I give it the seal of approval.

Michie Tavern, right on the edge of the Monticello property I believe. Colonial feel. It's in an old house and dates back to Jefferson's time, if I remember correctly. Food is dang good, too.
Beautiful picture of it my wife googled!

If I lived in Charlottesville, I'd be tempted to eat lunch there every day. Enjoy your trip. Virginia is a beautiful state from end to end. Also, if you ever happen to be in Farmville or Waynesboro on a weekend, check out the brunch at the Fishin' Pig. I needed a designated driver after that.

Eat like a pig, drink like a fish, HELLO! May do that, Hoss!

When in Appomattox, take approximately a 30-minute trip east and head into Farmville to eat at one of their several excellent local restaurants (below) and also take a trip to the High Bridge Trail.

Appomattox is mostly ****** fast food, I'm sure there is a decent local spot or two but the options are much better in Farmville.

Of course, you could also take a 30-minute trip West and head into Lynchburg too and have a lot more options. But there is a heck of a lot more traffic, Farmville is a nice little slow place to visit. If you just want something relaxing Lynchburg is not the place to visit.

Downtown is dominated by the world famous Green Front furniture and accessory stores - they have taken up residence in seemingly over a dozen buildings and they claim to deliver all along the east coast. A lot of people come to Farmville just to go to them stores. It's really damn pricey though.

Farmville is also home to Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College. H-SC is the 18th oldest college in the USA and the house where the college was founded is still located on campus.

If you wanted to spend the night in the town, Hotel Weyanoke is the place to stay. Really nice, pretty good prices with a discount for first-timers, has several restaurants inside the hotel including a roof top bar, and it's right in the middle of downtown with very to fairly short walks to most of what there is to do in Farmville.
  • Fishin' Pig - barbeque and fish place. I've literally never had a thing I didn't thoroughly enjoy, probably my all-time favorite non-chain restaurant. I am extremely picky with fish and I love their fish. If you are there at lunchtime on Monday's they have a half price lunch menu, one person can walk out of there paying just $5-7 (depending on how much you tip) if you order one meal off the half price menu with water.
  • Walker's Diner - tiny little diner but good stuff.
  • Merk's - Another diner type place, most expansive menu in the area. Would have gone there a lot more but it was a good 20ish minute drive from my house - and that's with hitting next to nothing as far as traffic goes - so it wasn't particularly convenient.
  • Pino's - Pizza and Italian
  • Perini - Pizza and Italian
  • Uptown - Coffee and cafe place. I've only been there once because it was out of the way for where I lived. What I had was good but I've heard good stuff from others.
  • Charley's Waterfront - on the pricier side and I've only been there once because of the prices. Talking like $10+ for a sandwich, some salads costing upwards of $10, 8 oz. steaks close to $30. And that is not including the cost of beverage and tip.
  • 3rd Street Brewery - not really a restaurant since they don't serve food unless there are food trucks there, but a good brewery+bar with activities going on most nights. Popular hang out spot for adults.

My man Fishin Pig is the GOAT. The Farmville location is the OG spot. My best friend is friends with all the people who run it and he's known them for most of his life, so whenever I would eat there with him, they would always give us a free basket of their catfish.

Not sure if the Waynesboro spot does that half price lunch on Mondays. Hell, when they first opened up there I heard they weren't even doing lunch. Next to the friends that I left when I quit my job there in Farmville and moved away, Fishin Pig and light traffic are the two things I miss the most.

I'm heading back to Farmville on Saturday for the afternoon and evening and might stop by there if I get the chance. Definitely not doing lunch because of what I have planned for the afternoon and dinner is being provided so might just have to get some to go to save for Sunday!

If you hit up the Pig as we affectionately call it in Farmville, you can buy their BBQ sauces and their fried food breading to use when cooking at home. NEver done it but boy have I been tempted, especially for their Sweet Memphis sauce. Nothing you can get at a grocery store comes close to as good as their Memphis sauce is!

Are you from that area? I was born in Farmville, lived in Appomattox as a youngster then 7th grade on in South Boston (After a 4 yr stay back in Buchanan County were my entire family is)

Actually met someone last weekend here in Knoxville that was from Rustburg.

JDHoss, Had a turkey sandwich with great home fries, wife said fried chicken tomorrow at Michie Tavern, waitress admitted their fried chicken is tops at Mel’s as we paid, I should have had it though the turkey was good. I enjoyed the banter of a few regulars, one talker looked like Vince Marrow’s brother!

If you like majestic views, hikes and nature, drive Skyline Drive. If you go North to South, it will take you towards Charlottesville.

Monticello and Michie’s Tavern today, particularly enjoyed both the fried and marinated chicken and atmosphere! Monticello has changed a lot since the early 1970s, back then I drove right up to a parking lot at the house! The gardens and other restorations look much better after increased government funding, Thomas Jefferson would be proud. The view of Charlottesville from the rear is getting blocked by all the trees We’re taking the full indoor tour this afternoon, should get a much better view at the top floor balcony of the home.

People have hit on most of the good places to eat. If you are there for the history, I'd also go to Montpelier - Madison's home that was owned by the duPont family for awhile (they built their own horse racing track on the property) but has since been restored to what it was in the 1700s. As you are going to Appomattox I'm guessing you have an interest in the Civil War. If you get far enough north, the battlefields clustered around Fredericksburg -- including Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania -- are among my favorites to visit.
Just didn’t have enough time, did go briefly to Appomattox and Farmville.

Only had time to do lunch at Charlie’s on the Water, and it was excellent! Lots of restaurant choices, could tell there was plenty to see in Farmville!
You'll have to make a return trip and spend a day in the Farmville area sometime. Not the best place to live unless you like small and slow but a good place to visit once in a while. Though being fairly centrally located between Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and the greater Richmond area makes it a great spot if you don't mind having to travel about an hourish to find some more civilization.
