November 22, 1963 ....... Kennedy assassination in Dallas.

View attachment 1019552

1) Kennedy's trip to Dallas was part of an effort to mend the fences between two rival political factions within the Texas Democratic Party as they entered the 1964 election. Who were the leaders of the two sides ?

2) Oswald carried a package to work with him on this day. What did he claim was in the package ?

3) Who (what individual) supposedly came up with the "Magic Bullet" theory ?

4) Why did Ruby go to downtown Dallas on Sunday morning ? Note -- this put him near the Dallas Police headquarters when Oswald was being moved to the regular county jail.

5) One of the first and most important books challenging the Warren Commission conclusion that Oswald was the sole assassin was "Rush to Judgement" by ____?_____ .

Super duper bonus question) In 1979 the House Committee on Assassinations gave some credence to the notion that there may have been a second gunman in Dealey Plaza. What was the basis of their conclusion ?

1) Senator Yarborough was the leader of the more liberal side of the Texas Democratic Party ... and .. Governor Connally headed the more conservative faction. They couldn't stand each other.

2) curtain rods

3) Arlen Specter - was a Federal (?) prosecutor in Philadelphia and became a key staff member of Warren Commission. He later became a Senator from Pennsylvania.

4) Jack Ruby's business was a strip club -- such as they were at the time. He went down to the Western Union office Sunday morning to wire money to one of his dancers to cover bus fare so she could get back to Dallas from wherever she was. The Western Union office was right next to the Dallas Police HQ where the transfer of Oswald was taking place.

By chance Ruby walked into the police building garage about one minute before Oswald and his police escort came down to get into their car. All this happened about 45 minutes after the publicly announced time that Oswald would be moved. At the original scheduled time to move Oswald Ruby was still in the Western Union office. So, it's hard to square the notion that Ruby was some planted Mafia assassin with the facts that his timing was pure happenstance.

5) Mark Lane

Super duper) They found an audio recording from the radio mike of a Dallas police officer. According to the scientists who studied this there were 4 sounds captured on this recording that were gun fire. Four shots meant there had to be another shooter in addition to Oswald.

Several years later a re-examination of this evidence showed that the particular motorcycle cop with the open mike was much further down the street than the first studies assumed. They did this by linking up the Zapruder film and other pictures of the events as they unfolded. Whatever rifle shot (?) sounds the first outfit thought they were picking up happened after Kennedy had been shot.

Assassinated on my birthday. I was in the first grade. We got out of school early and were told to go straight home. We all walked to and from school in those days, only 1/2 mile to my house on the other side of town. And my birthday party got canceled. None of us new the enormity of the situation.

KFC for Christmas in Japan? LOL. I know KFC is pretty popular in Australia but had no idea about Japan.

I will say this...while KFC's chicken is ok....their sides and biscuits? Oh man. I've stopped many times just to get some taters and gravy and biscuits and/or mac n cheese

And yes, much like my declaration that Cracker Barrel Chicken n Dumplings with a side order of Dumplings is a game changer.....
I know how fat that sounds.

In the Acquired podcast on the Coca-Cola company, the hosts asserted that Coke had a big influence on settling on red as Santa's clothing and a specific red, namely a red close to Coke. The company latched on to Christmas for imagery as a positive connection, and to help promote sales in the cold months.

2) About how many soldiers were in the British and American forces at the battle ?

4) The American soldier striking with his saber in the picture here may be ____?____ -- a soldier famous for being 6'6" tall -- an extraordinary height at the time. He was also notable as a fierce combatant .... particularly with his saber.

5) The Greensboro minor league baseball team is the "Grasshoppers". What does the term - Grasshopper - have to do with 18th century warfare ?

Super duper bonus question) The Battle of Guilford Court House has been described as a "Pyrrhic victory". What does that mean and what is the origin of the term ?

(1) Lord Cornwallis and Gen. Nathaniel Greene

(2) Placed militia on the frontline with the main Army hidden as a second main battle line

(3) Wasn’t a lot of soldiers. Something like 5000 total I think? And I would guess that would have been like a 3000 British / 2000 American breakdown?

(4) Col. Bannister Tarlton?

(5) don’t know

Super-duper: pyrrhic victory is a victory that really isn’t. Often more of a push/stalemate that feels like a victory at the time for one side that later is more aptly described as not and can often lead to a future loss due to overconfidence from the previous “victory”

Just a couple of points to note ...........

2) 2,000 - British ........... 4,000 Americans -- but that included many less experienced militia troops.

3) There were actually three lines of American troops in defense to meet the British charge.

a) The most inexperienced militia -- they were to fire one or two shots and then leave the field.
b) More experienced militia -- they were to fire a few more shots and then retreat to join the main battle line of Regulars / Continental Army.
c) Line of Regular or Continental Army troops.

At Guilford Court House the lines were too far apart ....... in contrast to Cowpens. This gave the British more space to regroup their battle line. So the British eventually overran the final or main battle line to win the field.

Super) A Pyrrhic victory is just like you stated. I would just add that what makes Guilford Court House and others into Pyrrhic victories is that even though the British took the field .... forced the Americans to retreat --- the British casualties were so high in winning -- about 25% of their army -- that it was a hollow win.

King Pyrrhus was a ruler of the Greeks who led a war against the Romans ~ 300 BC. "Pyrrhic victory" supposedly comes from the Battle of Asculum which the Greeks technically 'won' ... but at a cost of tremendous casualties. King Pyrrhus noted that they couldn't afford any more victories like this.

4) Peter Francisco

5) Grasshopper - small, mobile cannon that was easy to move around a battlefield as the lines and situation changed.
