This is what my Auburn people have come to the conclusion on. (Kinda long)
I will preface this by saying I know some of this may sound a bit farfetched. But up until this point, my Auburn information have been rock solid. I posted on here about the Dyer stuff about three days before it became public. I said 3 weeks before the end of the season Chizik was done. That wasn't a guess. That's when the decision was made. I was told the day before Gus was hired that he was going to be the new coach, and I was told two or three hours before the news Ellis Johnson was contacted to be the Auburn DC that he was already hired. I feel confident in my contacts.
From what I can tell, people don't know for sure about what went on with the whole Dyer thing because it has been very hush hush at the top, but they believe Malzahn was the "goat" for the Dyer cover up and that in fact Chizik and some of the staff were the ones involved in concealing Dyer's failed drug tests. The reason Dyer went with Malzahn to ASU was because he couldn't trust Auburn anymore because of how that situation played out. I'm not saying that is fact, but from the people I know close to the program, this is what they believe. Now obviously Dyer had bigger problems and got kicked off the team at ASU, but from what I've heard, Chizik and Company were the major players in that situation, not Malzahn.
They also believed Chizik was going to be gone at the end of the year almost regardless of how the season played out and they were led to believe this decision was made way before the season started. This goes back to the discipline problems, as well as the Dyer situation. There were a lot of higher ups that expected a season like this and from what I've heard, Malzahn was assured the job would be his once Chizik was fired. Malzahn was to save himself because people knew the NCAA was poking around and he was clean and that once the problem aka Chizik was gone, the HC job would be his. Didn't want him getting caught up in whatever came down from the NCAA, but they wanted him there to clean it up once it did go down.
All of this is why Malzahn is able to get rid of everyone. He's got some institutional power because of what he knows and promises made to him by Jay Jacobs. He's not going to be a talking puppet like Chizik was. He's going to have a lot more power to do things he wants. He's actually going to be given some leeway to do things his way because he built a good relationship with the Athletic Department. They trust him and the fans really like him. Malzahn has totally gutted the program and Auburn is going to start from scratch. They don't like the NCAA stuff and they know Trooper and Luper are no longer worth the risk because those high profile recruits aren't producing on the field.
Like I said, a lot of this might sound farfetched, but this is what I have been told. Take it for what you want, but I feel confident in what I've been told. Auburn is a damn complicated program and there are so many hands in so many different places. It will be very interesting to see how the Auburn program looks and feels going forward.
