@wildcats CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd, citing an unnamed source, says Auburn is close to hiring Tubby Smith as its new basketball coach

Damn, looking around at other jobs while your team is in the NCAAT. Probably not a distraction that this is leaking this morning at all.

Tubby would command alot of coin to leave Minnesota.

I hope it's true. It would be good for upgrading the conference. AU needs to be competitive.

To me Tubby is like a better version of Rod Barnes. He is great when he has talent but is not always that into recruiting. If he couldn't recruit top talent to UK then I am not too worried about him at Auburn. I agree that he would make Auburn better but I don't think they will even approach elite status in the SEC.

Definitely some questional recruiting efforts when he was at UK. But, I still like what AU is doing - assuming this is true. Tubby is 100x better than Lebo. Plus, they have that nice facility opening up next year - that will help with recruiting against the SEC opponents not named UK or UT. If he can get an assistant that's a great recruiter, I can see them being a solid competitor. Not to the level that UK, UT, or UF competes, but maybe more along our level (good, but not great).

Now, if Pelphrey and Kennedy could ever figure out how to win, the SEC might be able to build itself up to a respectable conference again.

I thought that Tubby would be headed to Oregon. Auburn is gonna have to pay big bucks to outbid Oregon (Nike $). I originally thought that Auburn would be in a tough situation because there are a couple of better jobs out there, but it looks like they are trying to make a quick move. I hope Tubby does go to Auburn because I think this will instantly give the west more credibility.

It is really amazing to me that anybody would get into a bidding war over Tubby Smith.

Probably amazing to the guy who wrote this too.

Yeah, they might not have landed elite players in every recruiting class, but they still landed their share of elite players spread thru the years, which is what many teams need since you have to play role players too.

Randolph Morris- #10 overall player, in the NBA now
Rajon Rondo- #25 overall player, a starter and elite PG in the NBA now
Joe Crawford- #9 overall player, was drafted into the NBA
Kelenna Azubuike- #14 SF, in the NBA
Derrick Jasper- #38 overall player
Jodi Meeks- #39 overall player, drafted into and playing in the NBA
Alex Legion- #44 overall player

He had 5 SEC Championships, an NCAA Championship,4 Elite 8 appearances, and 6 Sweet 16 appearances while at Kentucky.

Those 7 players are all in the top 50 and 5 are currently in the NBA..and thats only the great prep players he recruited in his last 5 seasons. Now its not like UNC where they have 10 McD AAs on the squad each season, but really now, how many places are like that?

Smith recruited well enough to consistently both win the SEC conference AND make deep runs into the NCAA Tournament.

I agree Auburn isnt going to approach elite status anytime soon.

I think he was able to recruit top talent to UK. Perhaps not as many players as some would like, but we all know fanbases have some unreasonable fans.

A one eyed mentally retarded monkey could recruit "good" talent to UK. Calipari stepped right in and showed the type of talent that UK should be getting there. Tubby deserves zero credit for being able to draw those guys there. Furthermore, he didn't even really win with them. Not by UK standards anyway.

Patterson was being recruited by Tubby, but he committed to Billy G. Thats why i left him off the list.

Yes, a one eyed mentally retarded monkey could recruit'good'talent to UK.

The players i listed were 'elite'. They were top50 of their class, and often 5* top 25 of their class. Thats elite.

I didnt bother to mention the 'good' talent because as you said, that sort of talentcould fall into UK's lap.

Alex Legion was a Gillispie recruit. Jasper can barely get minutes at UNLV.

Azubeike and Rondo (from Louisville)are the only two you've listed that havehad anykind of success in the NBA. If you were going to try andbuild a case for Tubby Smith's recruiting prowess - and that's a hard case to build - you should have thrown in Bogans and Prince. But even with those two added to your list, it just goes to show you what a ****** job he did at the winningestprogram in college basketball.

You are correct, Legion did commit in late April...i thought he had dropp UM and chosen UK before that.

As for the rest of your post, like i said earlier, i only even included players in the last 5ish seasons he was there.
NBA success or lack of has NOTHING to do with if the players were elite HS recruits. The reason why i even reference the NBA in there is to show that not only were those players elite, but they were elite enough to actually make it to the NBA. Making the NBA, even getting drafted and dropped before the start of the season, is an incredibly rare thing to happen since only 45ish college players are drafted each season. So yeah, id call em quite elite.
By all means, add the other players in there.

And the reason why i included all those team accomplishments is because a team of **** players simply doesnt accomplish that much. Those accomplishments are stellar, and sustained success like that comes from talented players.

I simply cant understand how the below stat line equals "what a ****** job he did at the winningestprogram in college basketball."

-5 SEC Championships. Made it to 6 Sweet 16s, 4 Elite 8s, and 1 NCAA Championship.
