Still sucks for him, but hey, what would have been better? Even a phone call would seem cruel.

He wasnt here because he didnt want to goto summer school so he could stretch out what classes he had so he could play this coming year...

Finding classes for him to take and keeping him eligible would be no problem at all.

If Phil was planning to go for a masters and continue playing he would of gone ahead and graduated and got it out of the way...
instead he did not.. draw your own conclusions on why a player might go this route.
Do remember he redshirted his freshmen year also.

Like patdog said, there is no reason they couldn't have found him some classes. And honestly, it wouldn't have hurt him to just enroll in Masters classes next year. He wouldn't even have to really do anything hard if he had no intention of getting the degree.<div>
</div><div>Phil just didn't want to have to exert himself AT ALL. And while I loved Phil's energy, that attitude is hard to defend. And it wasn't like he was at home working hard this month, either, he was going all over the place. It's hard for me to believe he was going to be able to improve any this offseason by spending his time like that.</div>

A player that has never played anything but hard for us and hustled his *** off...He's been here 4 years already- is it that big of a deal that he wasn't in summer school? Did Stansbury tell him to go to summer school or he would lose his scholly and he refused?

Just interesting the way this is going down

And I've lost count of open scholly's but was the intent to open up one for Bost maybe?

Still seems wrong to inform the guy like this and hoped we would have handled it better. Curious to see how the story develops.

maybe stansbury will get a letter in the mail next week telling him he is no longer the coach at Mississippi State. That would be too good to be true though.

He would of had to gone for his masters. Whether he was not ready to do so or was "being lazy" as you say I will not argue as I do not know his academic merits if he could get into grad school or not.

But for the team to handle matters in this manner is what strikes me wrong. A LETTER? Seriously.
Every one on the staff has each others numbers.

NCAA Bylaws
<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>
<span style="font-weight: bold;">14.1.8.2.1.3 Final Semester/Quarter</span>. A student-athlete may compete while enrolled in less than
a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is enrolled in the final semester or quarter
of the baccalaureate program and the institution certifies that the student is carrying (for credit) the
courses necessary to complete degree requirements. The student granted eligibility under this provision
shall be eligible for any NCAA championship and for any postseason licensed bowl game or National
Invitation Tournament that begins within 60 days following said semester or quarter, provided the
student has not exhausted the five years for completion of the individual’s four seasons of eligibility (see
Bylaw 14.2). Thereafter, the student shall forfeit eligibility in all sports, unless the student completes all
degree requirements during that semester or quarter and is eligible to receive the baccalaureate diploma
on the institution’s next degree-granting date. The Legislative Council Subcommittee for Legislative
Relief may waive the 60-day requirement for instances in which an NCAA championship, postseason
licensed bowl game or National Invitation Tournament is conducted at the conclusion of the traditional
playing season but begins more than 60 days following the end of said term. (Revised: 1/10/92,
1/16/93, 1/10/95, 2/1/05, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)

<span style="font-weight: bold;">14.1.8.2.1.4 Graduate Program.</span> A student may compete while enrolled in a full-time graduate
program as defined by the institution (see Bylaw 14.1.9). (Revised: 1/9/06 effective 8/1/06)

typical of the lack of leadership skills Stans seems to show every year. He's just lazy and doesn't make the time for his players.

I'm going to wait to judge the situation itself when Stansbury comments, but the fact that it's a story at all pisses me the hell off. Someone on our staff has to be more socially-savvy than this. KV is doing his job, but he works quickly and has a flair for the social networking tips, which our staff remains oblivious to. Unless Phil Turner is blatantly lying and bitter, the staff failed miserably in handling this situation. Phil was a workhorse. I'd like to think he deserved better.<div>
</div><div>That said, the team's potential does not change in my opinion.</div>

1.There are a lot of good reasons to document something like this in a letter. There's no proof in a phonecall like there is in a letter.

2. Does anyone honestly believe that this letter caught Turner by surprise? He already knew his scholarship wasn't going to be renewed. That's probably why he wasn't in summer school to begin with.

at least from what I have seen. I just don't understand the staff's position unless Turner was a cancer in the clubhouse. But if there was some guy who would get nasty on the floor, it was Turner.

Turner is vastly more athletic, but Benock is steadier in a lot of ways. Granted, his "steady" offers very little productive qualities, but it doesn't pose a threat regarding bad shots, bad attitude, or bad chemistry. I don't necessarily think Phil was bad for the team, but I do think his demeanor was a bit volatile. Am I actually defending Benock? Maybe, ****. Oh well. He hustles, too. Just doesn't really get a whole lot done. Very interested to hear Stansbury's response. It better be good.

Turner's facebook status said.. "I'm done with basketball and am moving to Atlanta"

Turner has known he wasn't going to play basketball in 2010 for along time now, atleast since the middle of the spring.

and the timing of this seem to imply the staff believes Dee will be eligible which I STILL DO NOT.

Per this NCAA Document, The deadline to renew is July 1st
http://web1.ncaa.org/web_...p%20Best%20Practices.pdf
P.4

f. Note: NCAA legislation requires institutions to provide student-athletes with written notice of the renewal/nonrenwal of athletics aid on or before July 1; however, as a best practice, institutions are encouraged to initiate this process as early as possible.

"There won't be any response from Stansbury on this"

Stans had sure better respond to this or he will look very bad in many peoples eyes. If there is a perfectly logical reason to the decision and the manner in which it was handled, he needs to explain it.

over the past couple years, I can assure you that you can be dealing with the most egotistical, lazy, and insubordinate worker in the world. You could also have a hundred performance improvement meetings and come to a mutual understanding after each one. However, when it comes down to actually pulling the trigger and letting said person go, you can rest assured that they will somehow find a way to play the victim 99.9% of the time.

I am not implying that Phil was lazy or insubordinate. I'm also not implying that none of this is Stansbury's fault. All I'm saying is that I'd expect nothing less than for Phil to start slinging mud, and I'm fairly certain that there's a whole lot more to this story that none of us know right now. I will say one thing though. Stansbury is his own worst enemy at times by taking this "no comment" approach. If nothing else, it creates a bunch of unsubstantiated rumors which can be just as bad PR as if they were true. He'd do himself a favor by answering the damn phone.

there is a poster on BDJ who claims to have direct knowledge to the situation, is that Phil told them he wasnt coming back, didn't take his physical, and missed several end of year meetings....

if true, to add to that.....

Phil in shouting matches with Stans on sidelines,

Phil deserved what he got......

and I think they do have to send a letter by rule......

on the flip side,

I think it was chicken **** of stans to not field his phone call for 2 days........he should have been prepared for that......

by the information coming out this morning ,it seems as if Phil was not coming back. He misses 2 or 3 team meetings, and posts his facebook staus as 'moving to Atlanta' , etc. There have been reports that Phil even told he staff he was done. There is alot more to this than Phil just receiving a letter in the mail saying he doesnt have a scholly anymore.

As a previous poster stated, Stansbury needs to talk to the media more about situations like this though. By his 'no comment' approach, we only here Phil's side of the story in the papers, and it makes Stans look like a complete idiot. If he would deal with the media accordingly, and actually answer a couple of questions, we could really get the truth as to what really happened.

on all this "Stans didn't know, yada, yada, yada and Turner didn't know yada, yada, yada."

This is more than likely 99.99% on Turner's back.

But, I was wrong once before, and I could be wrong about that.

Stans just lost a lot (maybe all) of my respect. That's garbage. first of all, phil should never have been let go...especially if benock's sorry *** still has a scholly. 2nd, what kind of ***** won't man up and tell somebody face to face?

Get the entire story before you make our coach look like a jackass. This one's all on Phil Turner. I've read and heard enough. Instead of waiting to get Stansbury's take, KV rushed the information trying to make a big deal out of it. Here's the story: Turner quit. The end.<div>
</div><div>We have a good beat reporter. He works hard and gets great information on a timely basis. But he failed to maintain a degree of professionalism last night. Rick has three 17ing kids. At least wait until morning to run with this.</div>

I like Rick as a person.. but am losing respect as him as a Coach. Guess what.. NOT EVERYTHING RICK SAYS IS TRUE. It's called spinning the truth and Rick does it well
So open your mind and stop being a damn sheep.

Kyle and the other media (P Jones, Stevenson, Locke) all gave rick plenty of time to respond..there is such a thing as deadline though.
and there is no sitting on it....Kyles job is not to sit on news just because rick doesnt want to answer his damn phone.

then I don't have a problem with the letter. I think over the years Stans' patience has worn down and he is nearing a no-tolerance policy for players who are given a schedule well enough in advance to make all necessary plans, only to try to vilify the coaching staff when the crap hits the fan. That act getstiresome. At this point in their life they are grown men, especially when they are nearing graduation. Same thing for Bost, completely inexcusable and should never have been testing the NBA waters after his soph. season.

Not everyone surfs facebook and checks message boards late at night like you, me, and Kyle Veazey. Rick has three kids. It was nearing midnight. Check Veazey's twitter updates. Give OUR COACH a 17ing break. He responded first thing this morning. This wasn't a story that had to be cleared by last night's deadline. It's tabloid at best.<div>

Phil knew he wasn't going back to the basketball team so why would he be so upset that he gets an official letter from MSU that his scholarship is revoked? Phil, by his actions or inactions, made the decision for himself....the letter just made it official.</p>
