twitter say Cohen leaning towards throwing Stratton against Samford

the key is winning the first TWO games, not the first one.

Do what you need to do to put yourself in best position to win the first 2.

I think that's the right choice. You can't lose the first game. Remember, we are a team that lost to Central Arkansas two weeks ago. We are due a let down hitting and a good pitcher from Samford could shut us down. If we were a one seed playing a 4 it would be different. But I think you have to throw Stratton against Samford.

They are probably one of the Top number 3 seeds. We truly got one of the hardest brackets.

Cohen almost ruined the game last night by leaving Mitchell in too long. I would have started the 9th inning with Reed, Holder, or Stratton. I don't like the decision to pitch Stratton first. Throw Woodruff.

...the win vs. Florida was an outlier.

With the depth & talent of MSU's pitching corp, there is no way Stratton should be wasted against Samford.

Even though Dick Howser Stadium is only 360 to the Right Field Power Alley, there is a 30 foot high fence there, so if Samford is lefty loaded, it may still be hard to put one out. On the other hand, it is just 365 to the left center power alley so if they are righty heavy, then we may need to start a RH...ergo Stratton or Graveman.

Stratton has dominated both sides of the plate so he could go against either type line up. I think we need to jump out and actually hit the ball and score some runs....and not have to depend so much on pitching in a small ball park.

I kinda see his point, but I also think we should rely on scoring runs on our own to beat them and not having to ride the hell outta Stratton to get it done.

Assuming he can rest up from his groin injury, he has been very good at times this year. Remember, he did shut out Florida earlier this year. He also has the ability to eat up a lot of innings with 2 CG's this year. I'd be confident with a healthy Graveman going against FSU or Samford. Also with Graveman, it's easy to tell if he is off by the # of ground balls getting hit.

Think it is also important to remember that most of these mid-major teams wins against the SEC came during the mid-week. Mid week games are just different. Those teams get up for those games and SEC teams throw young guys who don't pitch on the weekend.

Got to hit the ball to win Regionals and Super Regionals. Everybody got them a number 1 pitcher for opening night, just like in the SEC.

In other words they gave SEC teams a game every time they played. We should expect one too, and with our lack of hitting, it will likely be close. We need to make sure we give ourselves the best chance to win and then worry about game two. Discounting this Samford team would be foolish. This is the NCAA tourney and they earned 3 seed. They can play.

This regional for us is going to come down to us finding ways to push across 4+ runs a game to give us our best chance to win. Pitching will likely be there. If not we will be in trouble.

...Samford wasn't coming up 1 run short against the SEC's Friday night aces.

They were coming up 1 run short against other SEC teams' version of Chad Girodo.

Samford's team ERA is 73th best in the NCAA.

Samford better hit like the 1927 Yankees because their pitching staff is not going to keep MSU off the bases.

and that worked out well.

Actually Samford is probably some (little bit) better than MTSU was in 2005 but still Samford should struggle against our mid week guys and we should beat them with out SEC guys. Save the best for the best.

This isn't as bad as Polk wasting Maholm against Middle Tennessee, but I'm disappointed we're not saving him for FSU.

and we have a better chance of using someone else against Samford and Strat against FSU than Strat against Samford and someone else against FSU. That is all that really matters.

they also have conference games to play on the weekend.

If you are trying to make a point that they are not worthy of respect, I simply disagree.
