Perhaps an "unborn giant". Only 1 trip to the tourney in the last 14 years. Only 3 since joining the SEC. Last sweet 16 trip was in the early 70s. The rest of your points are good ones though...

For whatever reason, the state of SC seems to be pretty bad in basketball overall. No real above average teams there and no history to speak of. Definitely strange when you consider the powerhouse teams in surrounding states, and how much talent that state produces in the other bigtime college sports...

There are just some folks that you see either in person or on tv that just look like smug S.O.B.'s and he is one of them. I'm glad he's going to USC. Now he can die the slow death of the past coaches that have tried to wake that sleeping giant of a basketball program. Yes, I know they had a good run with the one group of guards they had, but other than that, USC has not been very good a basketball since joining the SEC. Give me Groce from Ohio.I liked that dude.

South carolina learned what ole miss will learn in a few years. Building a new arena isn't the magic potion for what ails you. They still have zero fan support, zero commitment from admin, and they can't recruit. Now that being said, martin would be a huge step in the.right direction for them. Its a step down for him though.

Could you imagine a press conference with him and Mullens?

The TV cameras would melt from the intensity in that room.

We should be able to make a hire in the same ballpark as SC at worst. If SC ends up with Martin and we we end up with an assistant, I'm going to be pissed.

not sure south carolina is that much of a sleeping giant. SC produces a lot less nba level talent than MS (both in pure numbers and per capita), and it's pretty difficult to go into NC and pull a player the carolina schools don't want.<div>

there is no way Duke and NC cansign all of the top talent in the area especiallywith the limited number of scholarships in basketball. Many of the UNC-Asheville type schools have pretty strong programs, probably better than SC at this point. If they hire Martin, they will be able to land some top recruits and start buildingtheirprogram. They have a new arena and will be shown on ESPN a lot more if Martin is hired and the fans will come.
