Or Lester and Kirk want to see both qbs perform in game conditions against NIU. Yawn
You can actually name a starter and still see both qbs performance in game conditions. You simply play them both. To think after Spring ball and this fall ball and you're just a couple days from game time and you can't figure out who your quarterback is? Inexcusable and incompetent. Or brilliance. I think the former.

Explain to me how naming a starter fundamentally changes the equation, particularly if both QBs are going to play anyway. Or at the least, explain how not doing so rises from something that might represent a fair difference of opinion to something that is “inexcusable and incompetent.”

Team unity so they can rally around a starter. Projecting confidence in your coaches and system. Projecting strength, confidence, and strong decision making to opponents, fans, the team. All can suffer when you are so lilly-livered after almost a year you still can't make a decision. KF is so boring and risk averse he craps tan colored crap and comes across as a weak knee spineless old man. Jesus man, you are the head coach, make a decision after almost a year. Waiting THREE more days is going to decide it? How laughable and almost embarassing.

Meanwhile, NIU hasn't named a starter. We'll prolly smoke them on team unity alone, I reckon.

Never said I had experience w team dynamics cletus... just said a team with a defined leader can be a benefit to one without. Better reading comprehensive will be your friend if you just give it a chance. And keep chatting with your 4th grader for those witty comebacks... you're killing it ! Good job! 🤣

All the discussion around QB is to be expected - but a walk on starting at DT is a potentially scary scenario. It might be fine, but it certainly raises concern around depth. Buckle up…!!

If we haven't named our qb #1 we don't have a qb. We don't need to play mind games with NIU

The last 10 years should have taught everyone that defense belongs at the low end of the worry list. It might not be elite, but I'd be really surprised it wasn't still a top 25 unit.

A former walk on who played significant snaps last year, and has been a Hawk for 4-5 years now? So, have we ever seen a former walk on excell at Iowa? Maybe that fact that he actually played last year, and has 4 years in the system gives him a slight nod to line up next to Hawthorne, Add to that they've already said they plan to rotate at least 4 or more DT's early on, and it will probably be okay.

I'd hope so. In the meantime... Tan Flavored Kirk can try and figure out, after working on it for almost a year, who can play qb. What a joke.

My guess, based on nothing but my gut, tells me that Kirk is starting Hank Brown and has known it for weeks. He knows that absolutely won't be popular so why announce it.

5 years as a walk on is different than starting as a walk on and earning a scholly shortly thereafter....
I get your point…… not sure why he was never awarded a scholarship….. could be with NIL he doesn’t need one….. but if the kid is starting as a walkon I’m going to guess he’s a gritty dude that plays his heart out

to be fair we should play them both simultaneously. i saw this drill where both guys are standing next to each other and snaps alternate...hope to see the same formation on saturday.

I have no doubt he plays his heart out....he wouldn't be a Hawkeye if he didn't. My biggest concern is the fact that we have 2 walk-ons in the 2 deeps at DT. For a B1G school that has designs for the CFP, that has to be fixed going forward. I read somewhere, can't remember where, that the biggest separator between the teams that make the CFP and those that just miss out, is play on the DL. More than QB. Hopefully it's just a one-year outlier as we get younger guys ramped up and find a guy or two in the portal.

I know people have talked about Winter and asked what's the difference between him and the walk-ons at DT. My response to that is that KF is a savant on the OL, particularly center, and if he likes Winter, who am I to argue. :)

They were neck and neck in practice. The scrimmage should have the deciding factor. I assume this is an old geezer rewarding seniority coupled with risk aversion. Cignetti wasn’t into risk aversion and that is why he has a title.
Did you watch football last year? Or brain dead?

KF took a big risk paying for an injured QB that needed surgery. Paid MG enough for him to pay his own surgery. Then stuck with him all season because the other two weren't ready.

Cignetti just buys one of the best QBs in the portal cuz they got the money. That's what the big boys do. It's their path. Works great when you got the money. Just ask Miami.

Idiots can’t figure out Indiana has a 32 million dollar roster and Iowa can only afford less than half of that. Iowas NIL is the bottom tier of the BIG, KF has them punching way above their weight.

Its possible Hubert and Gaffney are in the two deeps because they both had snaps last season, (Hubert was a rotational player). That doesn't mean that someone from the group of Stevenson, Kennedy. Olagbaju, or Fitzgibbons won't subplant one of them as the season goes on. Fitzgibbons is a 2nd year player with some buzz. Stevenson and Olagbaju (at 315lbs) were transfers.

I just think it's funny that people would rather the walkons at DT fail so that the "real players" with scholarships can step up at some point and replace them bc its a forgone conclusion that they suck. Winter at center as a walkon? A-OK.

What buzz is there about Fitzgibbons? He broke the squat record. Hubert broke it first, then Fitz broke it 15 min later. Hubert also broke the hang clean record. No buzz for that?!? What a joke.

NIL has made scholarships irrelevant in many cases. Can't use that as a barometer anymore.
To me it looks like Iowa is spending top portal QB NIL money on the best FCS skilled players it can find hoping they can match play in FBS.

I think scholarships are still relevant to Iowa especially at the QB position with the heavy spenders always going to the portal for QB.

Lester said in an interview that the QB at Iowa takes time to develop. He said at most schools the WRs have to know 14 routes. He said at Iowa every spot you lineup at has 14 routes (his words).

Buying QBs out of the portal for the top spenders every year may be helping Iowa land higher rated high school recruits at QB.

What's the point of a high-schooler going to a NIL spending program like that when they will probably buy someone to replace the position and you get to watch from the sideline each season.

Agree with almost all of this, the only difference is certain programs will pay to have multiple 5* guys sitting on the bench, which is a bit crazy. Ohio State had both Sayin and (likely bust) Air Noland sitting on the bench after brining in Will Howard. I would agree that this is where Iowa should be able to capitalize on the scenario by grabbing a 4* QB every couple of years. It will be interesting to see if Iowa ends up with top heavy recruiting classes some years, or if they go the numbers route hoping to hit on more.

This is what makes no sense to me. Why so complicated? Seems to me the more complicated, the greater the likelihood of a mistake, or for something to go wrong. That would appear to go against Kirk’s biggest priority…not making mistakes.

It’s no wonder our QB’s struggle and the passing game sucks.
