The topic of the Memphis/State KO got thinking, and then researching.
I HATE Week 1 and the logic of scheduling pussies. I'm all for eliminating FCS schools from a D1 schedule - if we can find a way to stop inflated prices non-conference at large games.
The default kickoff times are set to 11:00 and 1:00 depending on the time of year. ESPN lists the defaults until they're notified by the programming department that something has changed.
Patdog is incorrect about the 2:30 slot being "open." When CBS doesn't air a 2:30 CST SEC game, there simply is nothing else in that slot. ESPN does not adjust their schedule to compensate. CBS is sole exception to the giant machine that is the ESPN/SEC contract. They can tell ESPN to get #$$+%*.
Remember that ANY game where the SEC is the home team has to be broadcast. This kills ESPN in Week 1, because they're stuck with 12 games, most of which suck horribly.
The Chick Fil A game is a ABC designation, and coincidentally, the only good SEC game that day. USC is a Thursday game, so you're down to 10. Florida hosting Miami OH is already locked as the morning regional game on the "SEC Regional Network" (old LF/Raycom/JP).
Now you're down to 9, and to illustrate the powerful levels of pure SUCK, ABC has picked up the "Commonwealth black coaching festival" as a regional broadcast.
So, Kentucky @ Louisville (road SEC team but the Big East contract defaults to ESPN. ABC is the same thing as ESPN), is a 2:30 Regional ABC game.
(Remember Croom's first game? Same BS, and you all got on my *** about it).
Now we're down to 8.
Let's look at the D1 Games (both teams FBS), as they will likely compete strongest for airtime:
Northwestern @ Vandy
ULL @ Georgia
San Jose State @ Alabama
Arkansas State @ Auburn
Memphis @ Mississippi State
I smell some FSN here.
Lastly, you have three FCS **** box games. Lord knows where they end up.
Tenn Tech @ Arkansas
Jax State @ Ole Miss
UT Martin @ Tennessee
I think the new rule should be you can only have one FCS game, and it CAN'T be in Week 1. Homecoming / Recovery only.
