Two things that stand out to me tonight...

From looking at the stats - (1) Jarvis had 4 rebounds and 0 blocks. We have to have more from him on the boards and defensively. The points are great, but he has to change the game on the other end of the floor. It doesn't look like he did that tonight. (2) Dee had 2 points, 2 assists, and 4 turnovers. So goes the life of a freshman PG, but in his worst games, we need at least a positive or close to even A/TO ratio from him. Also, he only shot 2 FT's. He's the one who has to get to the line for us the most. Basically in summary, the guy who should be setting the tone offensively and the guy who should be setting the tone defensively came up short for us tonight. When that happens, that leads to the other team controlling the entire game, and it becomes extremely difficult to win.

when we play Tenn and Kentucky too. Those two being on the road, the way those teams play defense, are going to be tough nights on a young team. Those teams can match-up with us where other teams cant

I'd say pretty much every game we play hinges on those two things - Jarvis impacting the defensive end and Dee impacting the offensive end. That's why I don't worry about our "hot shooting." If Dee is impacting the offensive end we're gonna get good shots, and we have the shooters to knock them down when they get the looks. As Dee and Jarvis go, so goes the rest of the team. Kinda scary when you're hopes are in the hands of a freshman PG, but he's capable of controlling any game in any environment.

those two stats are pretty bad, i was very surprised to see varnados defensive line in the box score. We didnt have a chance when the rebounding margin was 44-24 though. he needs help as well (the follies of the 4 guard lineup)

That is the story along with being out rebounded by 20.

We live and die by the 3 pointer...

Obviously, it is important for any team to make shots. However, it is even more important for this team as there is nobody to grab offensive rebounds. If you are not getting rebounds, then each missed shot/lost possession becomes more critical. Especially, when you have a guy stroking it on the other end.</p>

night. So, would being 10-20 made a difference in the game? That would have been a 9-pt loss. Now, it could be argued that if we make those shots, the game is played different, but I dont think so.

My point is, I dont think we live and die by the 3. Sure, if we make them it is huge, but when the other team scores 81 pts we died by the lack of rebounds, defense, etc.

3 point line (let's say we go 8-20) AND we keep the rebounding margin to 10 or under we win. You aren't going to beat ANYBODY getting outrebounded by 20.

We were just beat by a better basketball team. They are even more athletic than we are and play good defense (2nd in the SEC in scoring D)- thats the reason we were 5-20 from 3. On offense, they attack the basket with those good athletes, getting easy shots or getting people open for 3's.
They have the best starting 5 in the SEC. They have been hurt by injuries the last two years, but they have always had good players. LSU is healthy and has lots of experience.

We have to move on and win a critical game at Jawja Saturday. Its going to be a fight to stay 2nd in the West

I have never disagreed with you that LSU is the better team. I thought we were going to get pounded last night and we did.

But it's still not impossible to win the West. LSU has some losses left on their schedule and so do we. If we can beat them at home(a huge task) and take care of horrible teams on the road (aka Georgia, Ole Miss), we have a realistic shot.

There is nothing that I have seen from LSU or State that shows me we can't squeak out a 1 point win at home. You act as if they are the Lakers.

they have to go to Kentucky and Tenn just like we do...I just think they are a bad match-up for us and dont see us beating them in S'ville either...not to mention some of the other road games we will have to pull off...

I think it will be close, they arent going to run away with it by no means

We will lose to Kentucky and Tennessee on the road. More than likely, LSU will too. That's a wash there. LSU still has to play Arkansas in Fayetteville. Who knows?

Our other remaining road games are: Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia. Both Ole Miss and Georgia should be wins. Georgia is awful and Ole Miss is decimated by injuries. The other two may be a little more difficult. Bama doesn't have Steele and they will have probably given up by February 21st. Again, who knows, Gottfried may have been fired by then and they could have a resurgence. We actually match up pretty well with Auburn. Neither team has a dominating inside presence.

The schedule favors State. We won our road game at Arkansas. LSU still has to do that.

They have as many road wins as we do...They have won 17 games in a row at home...we have to continue to hold serve at home and win some games on the road that while doable, will still be tough to do. We will know more after Saturday, i still think thats going to be a tough game for us

I see your point, but look at it this way. If Jarvis gets his average (around 10) in rebounds that's a swing of 12 in the totals (6 more for us and 6 less for them), so we're only out-rebounded by 8 which has been around the margin for the last few games. I think we can win with that margin. As for the poor shooting, I didn't see the game, but if Dee is getting into the lane, getting to the line, and creating shots for others, that opens up the opportunities for our other guys to get better looks, and with as many shooters as we have I think we could knock a few more down. . Maybe we still go 5-20 from 3's, but I think with those two factors playing like they normally do, we have more than a good shot to win the game. When they play like they did last night, we're doomed from the start.

we'd have still lost by15 or so.

However, if we'd nailed a few more 3's, our confidence would have increased and we'd have probably taken more than 20 shots from behind the arc, so you never know...

they were better last night. I don't think they're better overall. I was at that game with an LSU alum that has been to every home game this year. He said that that was their best effort of the season by a very wide margin. I think we return the favor in starkville. the guys got cocky for some reason...this loss will do them good in the long run.
