sterling has a population of roughly 15,500 and both sterling (5a) and sterling newman (2a) are 9-0 this year. the last time that happened was 1994 when both teams got to 11-0 before sterling lost to belvidere in the quarterfinals (and newman won the state title that year).

are there any other (small) towns in Illinois with two undefeated teams this season?

That is a tribute to a good Feeder Program..Sterling jr must have some good parent coaches.Sending the boys to High school with a high skill level and rapidly maturing physical ability is critical to building a competitive high school program.

I did a quick search of smaller towns (Freeport, Rock Island, Quincy) and the only case I could find where two undefeated teams from the same smallish town was in (drumroll):

2012

Ottawa finished 11-1 in 6A
Marquette finished 10-1 in 1A

You had Carmel and Libertyville both at state the year Carmel won it. Though Carmel is in Mundelein they are 2 miles apart
