But he does run better than he is given credit for sometimes. A big reason that Meridian beat South Panola was because of Russell's ability to make some plays with his legs on occasion.

and it looks like he wasn't lying. I think the threat of the QB running is more important than him actually running all the time.

He'll never be a lethal weapon running the football, but he can definitely make some plays with his feet.

Ralph is a running threat that can throw the football.

Russell is a qb that can run occasionally.

Both will do well in Dan's offense. Alex Smith was a 2 star pocket passer out of high school and Mullen turned him into a what I'm thinking Russell will be, although I don't know about getting drafted in any capacity.

when he breaks one vs an SEC defense- then call me

He played ok the other night- dont make it out to be more than it was..acting like he did something great late in the 4th Q blowout against Conf USA is a little ridiculous

.hopefully he continues to progress

Just because he hasn't had the opportunity to run more on them doesn't mean he can't do it.

Even on those 5 plays AT bama and AT LSU he still averaged 4 yards a carry.

He saw the Memphis defensive end crash down on our RB, took the ball back from our RB and ran unopposed around where the DE was. He's showing some football IQ. Good read by Tyler.

get. Thanks for telling us it was late in the game against Memphis, who you also let us know was a CUSA team. We would have never figured any of that out without you telling us. Where do you coach by the way?

You do not have to be a speed demon to run the spread effectively. Ask Alex Smith. Just make the right reads and run just enough to keep the defense guessing. I still think Tyler Russell will own alot of passing records before he leaves MSU if he sticks around the next two years.

Russell just needs to be able to break off a 10 yard run when he needs to and be able to read the play correctly. Last year even against Memphis, he wouldn't have turned the corner and scored. Recruits are saying we are planning on being more of a throwing team than we are currently next year.

but again, let's not make it out to be more than it was. We will throw it a little more next year with Russell as we slowly bring Prescott along each game- thats a given.

Truth. Russell played really well and looks like he's improved from the turnover machine of last season. However, there's no reason to get carried away. Memphis is easily the worst D-1 team on our schedule. The only team we'll play worse than them is UT Martin. Thursday night was a glorified scrimmage. We probably get better competition in our intra-squad scrimmages. Russell can run just enough to keep the D honest, but I highly doubt he'll be breaking a 26 yard run against a legitimate SEC defense.

I think Mullen had that smile and smurk on his face because Tyler called that played. Maybe something like this, "Hey coach, let me run it. It'll be wide open." Mullen responds, "Ha, what the heck. Go score a TD." Then laughs and smacks him on the helmet.

well or not, that's not what we're debating.....Sure, he's no olympic sprinter but he's faster than what most give him credit for........
