Tyson Lee was third in the SEC in completion percentage last year,

behind only Stafford and Tebow. What happened? Does the new scheme require throws he can't make? Seems odd that he'd fall off to the point that Mullen would consider starting a freshman.

I'd say it's a combination of spring rust/new scheme/new coach jitters. Mullen has said several times these guys obviously didn't throw as much in the offseason as they needed to to be prepared for spring practice. This scheme *should* actually fit Lee better than what we ran last year, considering he ran a spread offense at ICC. I think he'll start and hold onto the job this season, but it's becoming obvious that any hopes of redshirting Russell are quickly fading. Thanks, Crxxms, you 17ing worthless, fat-assed walrus!

by the coaches on signing day. I really dont think this is new news. I just dont see Russell beating out Lee, who has played a year in the SEC and has also had the benefit of Spring practice in the new system.

No way Russell overtakes him to start against JSU.

...I posted Lee's quarterback efficiency rating in another thread.

I can't reconcile Mullen badmouthing Lee considering Lee's QER was at least mediocre this past season.

If you can complete a pass under Croom's complicated scheme, you sure as hell should be able to complete passes under Mullen's "dumbed-down" scheme.

I think it's mental for Tyson. New coach jitters as someone else said. I believe he can do it once he settles down. That's what I'm hoping at least.

I don't know what the deal is with Relf. We need him to get his act together in the worse way.

A. try to redshirt Russell...letting Lee run the show all year and feeling comfortable that Relf would be ok if Lee got hurt during a game. Should Lee get hurt, you can always have Russell ready for the next game and burn his redshirt

B. decide Relf isnt going to be able to help you...let Lee start the season and get Russell experience every week

I'm guessing B will take place

You might be right. We may have to go with B.

I was thinking that it might be good to shore up the OL and WRs while Russell redshirted and set us up for success a couple of years from now. We may not have that luxury though.

Another thing that is probably affecting him this spring is that he has not gotten comfortable with this set of WR's yet. Berry is new, Lawrence and Green are playing there by necessity, McRae is not working in team drills. Robinson is basically only holdover WR from last year that he is familiar with. Any others were on the scout team last year.

After much thought, I do think we may have to play Russell this year. I was hoping for a redshirt, but with Mullen now recruiting QB's, it's not like we won't be capable of signing decent QB's from here on out. Lee is gone after this year, leaving only Relf and Russell. If, (when) Relf is overtaken during the year, who knows if he sticks around for 2010. That would leave only Russell plus whoever he signs this year. We would be better off with Russell having some experience going into 2010 than none at all.

Thinking outloud, what do you think about if we signed a juco QB this year if one was available and good enough, plus 2 high schooler's. That would give you going into 2010 a junior (juco guy), junior (Relf), Soph (Russell) and 2 Freshmen(s). Finding a juco that would want to come in and compete with Russell may be the only sticking point to that. They usually want to go into a situation where they know they will most likely be the starter.

It's just my feeling. I'd be glad to be wrong and hope Lee has a very successful season.

I think it's become very obvious that Russell will be #2 on the depth chart within a week of setting foot on campus. Relf just can't get his **** together.

there's no way in hell that Tyler Russell redshirts next year. Relf belongs nowhere near the field at an SEC school and Tyson Lee is maybe 5'9" and a walk-on. I don't care what his percentage was last year. Russell will be our most talented QB, hands down, the second his car pulls into Starkville. And the most talented guy usually ends up playing, unless he's a dumbass, which Russell isn't.

So there.
